BACKGROUND: Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a polymeric nanostructured fibrillar network produced by certain microorganisms, principally Gluconacetobacter xylinus. BC has a great potential of application in many fields. Lignocellulosic biomass has been investigated as a cost-effective feedstock for BC production through pretreatment and hydrolysis. It is well known that detoxification of lignocellulosic hydrolysates may be required to achieve efficient production of BC. Recent results suggest that phenolic compounds contribute to the inhibition of G. xylinus. However, very little is known about th

Komagataeibacter species are the best producers of bacterial nanocellulose membranes (BNC)-amazing biomaterial with unique properties and applications in the medical and food industries. The molecular mechanisms of BNC synthesis control remain poorly understood and the need for BNC production and structure improvement is growing. Looking for the genes significant for biosynthesis, we studied the unexplored effect of ClpP proteolytic subunit inactivation on Komagataeibacter xylinus E25 cell morphology and production of BNC. A mutant with a disrupted clpP gene and a complemented strain were obta

Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a versatile biopolymer whose properties can be influenced by fermentation conditions. Here, the effects of fermentation time (4-10 days) and microorganism (Komagataeibacter xylinus and K. hansenii) on BC were systematically evaluated. BC membranes were produced by static fermentation in Hestrin-Schramm medium at 30 °C for 4, 6, 8, or 10 days and characterized in terms of production, water absorption, structure, and mechanical properties. K. xylinus exhibited higher productivity, reaching 0.40 g L-1 day-1 during the early fermentation period, and produced membranes w

Biodegradable bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) is a highly in-demand but expensive polymer, and the reduction of its production cost is an important task. The present study aimed to biosynthesize BNC on biologically high-quality hydrolyzate media prepared from miscanthus and oat hulls, and to explore the properties of the resultant BNC depending on the microbial producer used. In this study, three microbial producers were utilized for the biosynthesis of BNC: individual strains Komagataeibacter xylinus B-12429 and Komagataeibacter xylinus B-12431, and symbiotic Medusomyces gisevii Sa-12. The use

Bacterial cellulose has been widely used as a raw material in the manufacture of medical wound dressings. However, its lack of inherent antibacterial properties and the susceptibility of its porous three-dimensional structure to bacterial colonization necessitate the adjunctive use of antimicrobial agents. Furthermore, the singular antibacterial function of the material falls short of meeting the multifunctional requirements of modern medical dressings. In response to these challenges, we have engineered a bacterial cellulose membrane imbued with rapid photothermal sterilization and pH fluores

Bacterial cellulose (BC) pellicles were produced from Acetobacter xylinum using a simple, additive-free, and low-cost static cultivation method consistent with sustainable and green bioprocessing principles. Two post-synthesis drying routes were compared: supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) drying following acetone solvent exchange and direct lyophilization without chemical additives or pre-freezing. The resulting BC aerogels and cryogels were characterized by SEM, confocal microscopy, BET analysis, FTIR spectroscopy, EDS, and geometrical evaluation with a particular emphasis on nanostructure

The anhydroglucose chains of cellulose possess hydroxyls that facilitate different chemical modification strategies to expand on, or provide new applications for membranes produced by the bacteria Gluconacetobacter xylinus. Conjugation with biomolecules such as proteins, especially by the amine groups, is of great value and interest for the production of biomaterial derivatives from bacterial cellulose. To assist in these modifications, cellulose was succinylated in order to prevent steric hindrance and to create an attachment point for conjugation. Bacterial cellulose membranes were first tre

This study optimized the conditions of producing bacterial cellulose (BC) membrane by co-culture with Komagataeibacter xylinus (K. xylinus) and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) to increase the production of BC. The yield and thickness of BC were used as indexes. The co-culture proportion of K. xylinus and L. plantarum, carbon source, pH value and the amount of ethanol addition were optimized in the same culture time. The results showed that the yield of BC was 6 times higher than that of the control group when the ratio of K. xylinus and L. plantarum in 6% of inoculations was 7:3,

The aim of this study was to investigate the usability of bacterial cellulose (BC) produced by Gluconacetobacter xylinus NRRL B-759 (Komagataeibacter xylinus) as a membrane filter and to determine the shortest incubation time for obtaining the BC membrane with an effective removal capacity. BC production of this bacterium was found to be dependent on incubation time (day), and the properties of the membranes produced on each day were then examined in detail. BC formed on the third day showed a suitable peak structure and ideal formation of the cellulose structure, as determined by FTIR and X-r

Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC), produced by Gluconacetobacter xylinus and G. hansenii, is a promising biopolymer. In this study, green tea and sucrose were used as a sustainable and low-cost culture medium, achieving optimal conditions at 60 g/L sucrose supplemented with green tea, with a maximum yield of 7.56 g of dry BNC after 15 days of cultivation. To address the limitation posed by BNC's high water-holding capacity in textile applications, BNC was functionalized with titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanoparticles via a sol-gel method, applied for the first time for this specific purpose. Optimal co

Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of mortality worldwide, necessitating advanced revascularization strategies such as coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). While autologous vessels like the saphenous vein are commonly used, their limited availability, their potential maladaptation to the arterial environment, and the suboptimal performance of synthetic alternatives underscores the urgent demand for innovative small-diameter grafts. Grafts made of Bacterial Cellulose (BC), synthesized by Acetobacter xylinum, have gained attention due to its excellent biocompatibility, mechanica

Bacterial cellulose (BC) produced by Komagaeibacter xylinum exhibits greater purity, Young's modulus, tensile strength and crystallinity than plant-derived cellulose. In contrast, natural plant cellulose, which is Iβ-rich, BC comprised a predominantly cellulose Iα structure. In this study, we cultivated BC in situ in the presence of water-soluble polymers-poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) or poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-to obtain BC/water-soluble polymer composites. Their physical properties were systematically examined. We specifically evaluated the effect of increasing the viscosity of the culture me

Bacterial cellulose (BC)-based biomaterials on medical device platforms have gained significant interest for tissue-engineered scaffolds or engraftment materials in regenerative medicine. In particular, BC has an ultrafine and highly pure nanofibril network structure and can be used as an efficient wound-healing platform since cell migration into a wound site is strongly meditated by the structural properties of the extracellular matrix. Here, the fabrication of a nanofibrillar patch by using BC and its application as a new wound-healing platform for traumatic tympanic membrane (TM) perforatio

The formation of bacterial cellulose pellicles by Acetobacter xylinum is investigated in growth media supplemented with sodium alginate (SA) or carboxymethylcellulose (CMC). Both polymers influence bacterial cellulose assembly during growth, but through distinct physicochemical mechanisms. In SA-containing media, increased viscosity reduces bacterial mobility and promotes the formation of denser pellicles with reduced interlayer spacing and porosity, without substantially affecting cellulose production. In contrast, under the acidic culture conditions used in this study, CMC undergoes pH-depen
