Scleral-fixated IOLs - A comprehensive review of current practices and emerging trends.

Scleral-fixated intraocular lenses (SFIOLs) have emerged as a vital option for visual rehabilitation of aphakia in cases where capsular support is inadequate or absent. Although alternative methods such as anterior chamber IOLs (ACIOLs) and iris-claw lenses may also be employed in such scenarios, SFIOLs are particularly suitable for eyes with low endothelial cell counts, shallow anterior chambers, iris abnormalities, or aniridia. First introduced by Malbran et al., SFIOL techniques have evolved significantly, with numerous modifications and innovations contributed by surgeons worldwide. This a

Four-flanged, intrascleral fixation of foldable intraocular lens using straight-needled 7-0 polypropylene suture - A surgical technique.

The occurrence of intraocular lens (IOL) implantation failure in phacoemulsification is relatively uncommon. However, because cataract surgery is the most prevalent surgical procedure worldwide, the aggregate instances of post-surgical aphakic status are significant. Though several alternatives, including anterior chamber IOL, iris-fixated IOL, and scleral-fixated IOL (SFIOL), exist for secondary IOL implantation, recent trends favor SFIOL implantation. In the realm of SFIOLs, all sutureless variants necessitate the exteriorization of the haptic through the sclera, implying a larger sclerotomy

Ophthalmic outcomes five years after lensectomy among children with Down syndrome.

We report demographics and post-lensectomy outcomes in 30 children (39 eyes) with Down syndrome and cataract. Mean age at first lensectomy was 3.0 years (range, 0.04-12.9); 16 of 30 patients (53%) had lensectomy before 12 months of age. The 5-year cumulative incidence of glaucoma-related adverse events was 38% (95% CI, 0%-69%); of retinal detachment, 3% (95% CI, 0%-9%). The median myopic shift in children with refractive data at 5 years was -10.00 D (IQR, -12.50 to -8.38 D) in 11 aphakic eyes and -1.50 D (IQR, -3.00 D to -0.25 D) in 7 pseudophakic eyes. Reverse Pupillary Block - a Complication of Sutureless Scleral-fixated Intraocular Lenses.

Reverse pupillary block (RPB) is a posterior bowing of the iris, which is most likely caused by a flap-valve-like mechanism between the lens and the iris. It can lead to iris chafing, pigment dispersion glaucoma and uveitis-glaucoma-hyphema syndrome. In this study we examine patients who underwent sutureless scleral-fixated IOL implantation due to IOL luxation or aphakia. At the follow up visit, a slit-lamp examination, a measurement of the intraocular pressure and an anterior segment OCT (Anterion) were performed. Of 41 eyes, eleven showed the constellation of an RPB. This condition is not ne

Generation of the induced pluripotent stem cell line IOCVi002-A from a patient with the FOXE3-related sclerocornea-aphakia malformation.

Anterior segment dysgeneses (ASDs) are a heterogeneous group of ocular developmental anomalies commonly associated with severe visual disability in pediatric age. Here, we report the generation of the iPSC line IOCVi002-A from a patient with a homozygous pathogenic c.292 T > C (p.(Y98H)) variant in the FOXE3 gene causing an ASD phenotype characterized by sclerocornea and aphakia. IOCVi002-A cells shows normal morphology, typical stemness and pluripotency. This iPSC line can be used for in vitro disease modeling for developmental ocular anomalies affecting anterior structures of the eye.

[Current approaches to improving the effectiveness of multifocal and extended depth of focus intraocular lenses].

Phacoemulsification with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation has become the standard method for cataract extraction regardless of its etiology. In modern phaco surgery, implantation of multifocal IOLs is considered the most advanced method for correcting aphakia following lens extraction. The wide range of available multifocal IOLs is promoting the ongoing discussion regarding the advantages of each type, as well as potential strategies for optimizing surgical outcomes. This literature review presents current methods for improving the performance of various types of multifocal and extended dep
