Visible-Light-Driven Hydroacylation of Unactivated Alkenes Using Readily Available Acyl Donors.

Herein, we report visible-light-driven hydroacylation of unactivated alkenes. We employed benzimidazolines as new acyl donors and achieved perfect regioselectivity, high functional-group tolerance, and excellent substrate generality. We also performed mechanistic experiments to elucidate the detailed reaction mechanism. This is the first example of (1) hydroacylation of unactivated alkenes using (2) easily prepared acyl donors under (3) visible-light irradiation. Our findings offer a new strategy to synthesize a wide variety of ketones under mild conditions.

Wittig/B─H insertion reaction: A unique access to trisubstituted Z-alkenes.

The Wittig reaction, which is one of the most effective methods for synthesizing alkenes from carbonyl compounds, generally gives thermodynamically stable E-alkenes, and synthesis of trisubstituted Z-alkenes from ketones presents notable challenges. Here, we report what we refer to as Wittig/B─H insertion reactions, which innovatively combine a Wittig reaction with carbene insertion into a B─H bond and constitute a promising method for the synthesis of thermodynamically unstable trisubstituted Z-boryl alkenes. Combined with the easy transformations of boryl group, this methodology provides eff

Hydrosulfonylation of Alkenes with Sulfonyl Imines via Ir/Cu Dual Photoredox Catalysis.

Sulfonamides exhibit the advantages of wide prevalence, excellent prefunctionalization capability, and broad functional group compatibility. We report here utilizing sulfonyl imines as sulfonyl radical precursors for hydrosulfonylation of activated alkenes via visible-light irradiation. By preinstallation of functional groups into the sulfonamides and subsequent hydrosulfonylation, a variety of complex sulfones were synthesized with good efficiency under Ir/Cu dual photoredox catalysis. Additionally, this protocol expands the research in late-stage N-S bond modification in sulfonamides.

Divergent regioselective Heck-type reaction of unactivated alkenes and N-fluoro-sulfonamides.

The control of regioselectivity in Heck-type reaction of unactivated alkenes represents a longstanding challenge due to several detachable hydrogens in β-H elimination step, which generally afford either one specific regioisomer or a mixture. Herein, a copper-catalyzed intermolecular Heck-type reaction of unactivated alkenes and N-fluoro-sulfonamides with divergent regioselectivities is reported. The complete switch of regioselectivity mainly depends on the choice of different additives. Employment of alcohol solvent gives access to vinyl products, while the addition of carboxylate leads to th

Palladium-Catalyzed Sequential Heck Reactions of Olefin-Tethered Aryl Iodides with Alkenes.

An efficient approach to functionalized (E)-3-cinnamyl-3-methyl-2,3-dihydrobenzofurans and (E)-(3-methyl-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran-3-yl)but-2-enones has been developed through a Pd-catalyzed one-pot cascade process involving two sequential Heck reactions, that is, an intramolecular Heck reaction of olefin-tethered aryl iodides and an intermolecular Heck reaction with substituted styrenes and α,β-unsaturated ketones. As a result, a series of desired products were obtained in moderate to good yields and with exclusive E-form selectivities.

Electrochemical Reduction of Halogenated Alkanes and Alkenes Using Activated Carbon-Based Cathodes.

Granular activated carbon (GAC) is used to sorb a broad range of halogenated contaminant classes, but spent GAC disposal is costly. Taking advantage of GAC's conductivity, this study evaluated the conversion of the GAC to cathodes for electrochemical reductive dehalogenation of 15 halogenated alkanes and alkenes exhibiting a diversity of structures (type of halogen, number of halogens, functional groups) and including contaminants of practical importance (e.g., trichloroethylene). Alkane degradation rates increased with the number of halogens and in the order: chlorine < bromine < iodine. Quan

Vicinal Difunctionalization of Alkenes Using Vinyl Triflates Leading to γ-Trifluoromethylated Ketones.

We report a new methodology for the synthesis of γ-trifluoromethylated ketones from alkenes and vinyl triflate bifunctional reagents. The reaction proceeds via the addition of a β-trifluoromethyl alkyl radical to a vinyl triflate, followed by β-cleavage. We also demonstrate a one-pot version of the reaction for the vicinal functionalization of alkenes from alkynes.

Stereospecific Synthesis of E-Alkenes through Anti-Markovnikov Hydroalkylation of Terminal Alkynes.

We have developed a method for stereospecific synthesis of E-alkenes from terminal alkynes and alkyl iodides. The hydroalkylation reaction is enabled by a cooperative action of copper and nickel catalysts and proceeds with excellent anti-Markovnikov selectivity. We demonstrate the broad scope of the reaction, which can be accomplished in the presence of esters, nitriles, aryl bromides, ethers, alkyl chlorides, anilines, and a wide range of nitrogen-containing heteroaromatic compounds. Mechanistic studies provide evidence that the copper catalyst activates the alkyne by hydrocupration, which co

Photochemical formation of mutagenic compounds from alkenes and ozone or nitrogen dioxide.

In order to investigate the possible formation of mutagenic compounds from alkenes emitted in ambient air, laboratory experiments were performed with Salmonella typhimurium strain TA100 in a small-scale flow-through exposure system. The reaction time for mixtures of alkenes with ozone or nitrogen dioxide was 40 minutes, and the exposure time for bacteria was 6 hours. Ozone gave rise to a small mutagenic effect in combination with 1,3-butadiene or vinyl chloride, with and without ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, but not in combination with ethene or propene. Nitrogen dioxide gave rise to a mutagen

Neutral and Cationic Bis(guanidinate) Digallanes and Gallium-Catalyzed Alkene Hydroboration.

A bis(guanidinate) supported gallium dihydride, (L)GaH2; (1-H) (where L = {(DepHN)(DepN)-C═N-C═(NDep)(NHDep)}; Dep = 2,6-Et2-C6H3), serves as an ideal precursor for accessing neutral and cationic Gall-Gall bonded species. The neutral digallane [(L)GaCl]2 (2) can be accessed through multiple synthetic pathways, including the reactions of (1-H) with Cp2ZrCl2, (L)GaCl2; (1-Cl) with Cp2ZrH2, (1-H) with (1-Cl), and (1-H) with Ph3CCl. These complementary routes demonstrate the facile formation of the Ga-Ga bond from both gallium hydride and chloride precursors. Moreover, treatment of (1-H) with trip

Photocatalytic Denitrative Homo- and Cross-Coupling of Nitroalkanes toward the Synthesis of Alkenes.

Alkenes serve as fundamental motifs across natural products and synthetic molecules, yet efficient, mild, and versatile olefination strategies remain in demand. Nitroalkanes, renowned for their broad reactivity as nucleophiles or corresponding radicals, still offer untapped potential in photocatalysis. Here, we report a unified, photocatalyzed generation of α-nitroalkyl radicals via oxidation of simple, nonprefunctionalized nitronates, followed by addition to another nitronate (formal homo- or cross-coupling) and subsequent double denitration to furnish alkenes. This transformation leverages b

Methyl-Selective Radical Sorting for the Regio- and Stereoselective Dialkylation of Activated Alkenes.

The regioselective incorporation of two alkyl radicals across alkenes is an attractive strategy for C(sp3)-C(sp3) bond construction, but remains difficult when the radical partners have similar polarity and limited steric differentiation. Here we report a photoinduced nickel-catalyzed strategy for the regio- and cross-selective 1,2-dialkylation of activated alkenes, including electron-poor olefins and styrenes, in which a methyl group and a second alkyl fragment are installed at defined, complementary positions across the C═C bond. The process relies on iodine(III) carboxylates, either preform

Detection and Identification of Alkenes and Alkynes Using a 19F-Labeled NMR Probe.

We report a trifluoromethyl-labeled copper(I) complex probe that, in combination with 19F NMR spectroscopy, enables rapid and specific detection of alkene and alkyne compounds. The probe operates based on dynamic coordination interactions between the Cu(I) center and unsaturated hydrocarbons, converting recognition events into distinct 19F NMR signal changes, thereby allowing "separation-free" analysis without requiring complex sample pretreatment. Experimental results demonstrate that the probe can effectively discriminate between terminal and disubstituted alkynes, distinguish structurally s

Selenium atom transfer enables selective bridged alkene-arylamine cycloaddition.

Cycloaddition reactions are central to building cyclic molecular architectures for drug discovery and materials science. However, controlling single-atom-bridged cycloaddition remains elusive. Herein, we describe a selenium-atom transfer [3 + 2 + 1] heterocycloaddition of readily available arylamines, alkenes and diselenides, enabling rapid, modular access to diverse selenium- and nitrogen-containing heterocycles, including selenomorpholines and polycyclic 1,4-selenazinanes. This metal-free method operates under mild, simple conditions with scalability, showcasing broad substrate generality an

Directed Evolution of Copper-Substituted Nonheme Enzymes for Enantioselective Alkene Oxytrifluoromethylation.

Trifluoromethylation is a coveted transformation due to the unique properties of the trifluoromethyl (-CF3) group and the importance of organofluorine compounds. Enzymes that can catalyze the formation of C-CF3 bonds would therefore be highly desirable. However, such "trifluoromethylases" are rare. Here, we report a biocatalytic platform for constructing CF3-substituted lactones via intramolecular alkene oxytrifluoromethylation based on hydroxymandelate synthase from Amycolatopsis orientalis (AoHMS), a nonheme iron enzyme. The key feature that enabled the development of this enzymatic system w

A Remarkable Catalyst-Free Photochemical Alkene Hydrophosphination with Bis(trimethylsilyl)phosphonite.

This publication delves into a comprehensive exploration of a new synthetic route to functionalized phosphorus-derived compounds. Bis-(trimethylsilyl)-phosphonite HP-(OSiMe3)2, prepared in a high yield from H3PO2, was found to be an excellent reagent for hydrophosphination of activated, unactivated, and amino acid-derived olefins under UV irradiation and catalyst-, solvent- and glovebox-free conditions. The resulting phosphorus trivalent compounds have been subjected to postfunctionalization, leading to the formation of H-phosphinate, phosphonate, and thiophosphonate end products in good to ex

Photo-induced hydroxypentafluorosulfanylation of alkenes with SF5Cl and oxygen gas and their further derivatization.

Fluorinated or fluoroalkylated alcohols are common structural motifs in biologically active molecules, natural products, and pharmaceuticals. However, pentafluorosulfanyl (SF5) alcohols, a unique class of SF5 compounds that serve as synthetically valuable building blocks, are difficult to prepare with current methodologies. In this article, we present a single-step, metal-free, and photo-induced hydroxypentafluorosulfanylation of styrenes or α,β-unsaturated esters/amide, producing a series of structurally diverse pentafluorosulfanyl alcohols with up to 89% yields.
