PURPOSE: Standard corneal collagen cross-linking (S-CXL) is an effective treatment to arrest Keratoconus (KC) progression in children. Less is known on the long-term efficacy of accelerated CXL (A-CXL) in paediatric populations.
METHODS: A historical cohort analysis of paediatric patients (≤18 years) with KC who underwent S-CXL and A-CXL at two tertiary referral centres in Israel between 2010-2017. Preoperative and 3-year postoperative evaluation included changes in visual acuity (best spectacle corrected [BSCVA]) and uncorrected [UCVA]), refractive errors, and keratometric data.
RESULTS: Ni

Quantitative evaluation of the human corneal grafts stored in the tissue banks is usually limited to endothelial cell density and central thickness. Swept-source OCT (SS-OCT) is capable of measuring the central curvatures of the corneal tissue prepared for transplantation without loss of sterileness, providing insights on its refractive state. The aim of the paper is to compare in vitro SS-OCT measurements with pre-excision values. Hand-held keratometry and ultrasound pachymetry was performed on 22 corneas before excision of corneoscleral button and insertion in the vial with Eusol-C solution

Pellucid marginal degeneration (PMD) is a non-inflammatory ectatic corneal disease characterized by a narrow band of corneal thinning separated from the limbus by a relatively uninvolved area 1-2 mm in width. It is a rare corneal disorder that shares many clinical characteristics with other corneal ectasias, such as keratoconus, keratoglobus or Terrien marginal degeneration. PMD usually starts later in life than keratoconus and progresses slower than keratoconus. Slit-lamp examination is very useful to distinguish PMD from other corneal ectatic disorders with inflammatory nature. Corneal topog

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to establish a novel bilateral differential topographic algorithm and assess its efficacy for screeni … ostic efficacies. Results: Mann-Whitney tests detected that the front keratometry, front elevation, corneal pachymetry, and back elevation maximal, mean, and standard deviation values within a 1.5-mm radius of the bilateral differential topography were all significantly higher in the KC group than in the control group (all p-values <0.001). The front keratometry mea …

PURPOSE: Riboflavin and ultraviolet-A induced cross-linking (CXL) is a promising therapeutic option to halt the progression of keratoconus. The aim of the study was to prove a long-term stabilizing effect of riboflavin and ultraviolet-A induced collagen CXL in young and otherwise healthy patients with progressive keratoconus and a corneal thickness of at least 400 μm on average 10 years after treatment.
METHODS: Corneal CXL was performed after removing epithelial tissue by instilling riboflavin 0.1% solution for 30 min before and during 30 min of ultraviolet-A irradiation (370 nm, 3 mW/cm(2))

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of chronic epithelial scrape injury on corneal morphology.
METHODS: The corneal epithelia in one eye of 8-week-old New Zealand White rabbits were scraped at weekly intervals. Central corneal thickness was measured by ultrasonic pachymetry before epithelial scrape each week. Control never wounded (C), chronic wounded with scrape the last week (W), and chronic wounded without scrape the last week (WW) corneas were processed for histologic analysis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The time intervals for histologic analysis

Patients with progressive keratoconus submitted to either PTK-CXL or PTK and TG-PRK plus CXL (PRK-CXL) protocols were included, depending on baseline pachymetry and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA). Minimum follow-up of 12 months up to 3 years.

PURPOSE: To primarily compare surgically induced astigmatism (SIA), total and posterior corneal curvature, pachymetry, and their stabilization after 2.2 and 2.8 mm clear corneal incision in phacoemulsification.
METHODS: A randomized, prospective interventional study of 130 patients (130 eyes) of either sex having senile cataract (>40 years) divided randomly into two groups. The patients underwent uncomplicated phacoemulsification surgery with foldable intraocular lens implantation using 2.2 mm (group 1) and 2.8 mm incisions (group 2). The patients were evaluated preoperatively and followed-up

PURPOSE: To compare the topographic and biomechanical properties of corneas in the eyes of patients with ocular rosacea (OR) with those of healthy individuals.
METHODS: Thirty-four healthy individuals (control group) and 34 patients with OR (study group) were evaluated in this study. Topographic measurements including keratometry values, irregularity, and surface asymmetry index in the right eye of each participant were obtained using a Scheimpflug camera with a Placido disc topographer (Sirius). PURPOSE: To investigate associations between the diurnal variation in a range of corneal parameters, including anterior and posterior corneal topography, and regional corneal thickness.
METHODS: Fifteen subjects had their corneas measured using a rotating Scheimpflug camera (Pentacam) every 3 to 7 h over a 24-h period. Anterior and posterior corneal axial curvature, pachymetry and anterior chamber depth were analyzed. The best fitting corneal sphero-cylinder from the axial curvature, and the average corneal thickness for a series of different corneal regions were calculated. Measures of intra

PURPOSE: To assess repeatability and agreement of corneal epithelial thickness mapping in eyes with keratoconus using three optical coherence tomography (OCT) devices featuring different technologies: spectral-domain (SD) OCT combined with Placido disk corneal topography (MS-39), swept-source OCT (Anterion), and SD-OCT (Avanti).
METHODS: Three consecutive measurements were acquired with the three devices in 60 eyes with keratoconus. The mean epithelial thickness was calculated in the central 2-mm zone and in 2- to 5-mm and 5- to 7-mm diameter rings. The repeatability was calculated using pool

PURPOSE: To enhance the current standards of subclinical keratoconus screening based on the statistical modeling of the pixel intensity distribution of Scheimpflug images.
METHODS: Scheimpflug corneal tomographies corresponding to 25 corneal meridians of 60 participants were retrospectively collected and divided into three groups: controls (20 eyes), subclinical keratoconus (20 eyes), and clinical keratoconus (20 eyes). Only right eyes were selected. After corneal segmentation, pixel intensities of the stromal tissue were statistically modeled using a Weibull probability density function from
