The Currarino triad is a complex genetic disorder characterized by multiple caudal anomalies. Currarino et al first described this syndrome in 1981 as a sacral bony defect, presacral mass, and an anorectal malformation. Patients with this disorder usually present with constipation and characteristic radiological findings. Early diagnosis is vital for improving patient prognosis and quality of life. We report a case of complete Currarino triad in a 7-month-old girl with an unusual presentation of diarrhea, who was later found to have an imperforate anus with rectoperianal fistula, a presacral l

We report on a case of duplicated hydrometrocolpos with uterus didelphys, a septate vagina, lower vaginal atresia, a persistent urogenital sinus, left ear agenesis, a single umbilical artery, and an imperforate anus, but without the associated features of McKusick-Kaufman syndrome such as polydactyly and congenital heart defects. Ultrasound-guided fluid aspiration of the fetal intrapelvic cystic mass helped to decompress the distended genital organs, decrease the severity of the urinary tract obstruction, delineate the ultrasonographic image of duplicated hydrometrocolpos to differentiate it f

This report concerns two cases of G syndrome in male neonates with hypertelorism, hypospadias and hoarse/voiceless cry. Case 1 had a positive family history; all similarly affected relatives have apparent hypertelorism. Case 2 seemed to represent a new mutation, since the parents are apparently normal, and the family history was non-contributory. The clinical expression of Case 1 was relatively severe and needed further surgical management, such as imperforate anus, hypospadias, and vesicoureteral reflux. Case 2 had two manifestations not previously reported: hypoplasia of cerebellum and web n

Four newborns had tracheal agenesis and numerous features of the VATER (vertebral defects, imperforate anus, tracheoesophageal fistula, and radial and renal dysplasia) association. Forty-two additional reported cases of tracheal agenesis have been reviewed to establish whether this defect usually occurs in association with other VATER abnormalities. Since tracheal agenesis usually is accompanied by other VATER-associated defects and since similar abnormalities in embryological mechanisms and timing are implicated, according to current theories of development, we propose that tracheal agenesis

Presentation of two cases of imperforate anus managed in infancy. In first case, at age of 19, surgical closure of recto-urethral fistula associated to excision of a rectal pouch complicated with infected lithiasis and renal damage provides definitive therapy. In second case, recto-urethral fistula was well tolerated for more than 50 years without renal damage. Simple removal of a prostatic lithiasis partially obstructing fistula, provided fair good result. Etiology of these fistulae, well known in pediatric patients, is then discussed. Management must be adapted to complaints and risks.

A 1-year-old boy presented with complete duplication of the penis, with an ectopic bowel segment as an associated anomaly. The boy had duplicated epispadiac urethras. The right one ended blindly whereas the left one was patent, leading into the bladder. There was separation of the symphysis pubis and bifid scrotum. Investigations revealed no other anomalies. A review of the literature concerning diphallus showed a preponderance of associated anomalies such as exstrophy, bladder duplication, ureteral or renal defects, and imperforate anus, but no cases with an ectopic bowel segment. We report t

A stillborn bovine male fetus with abdominal distention, arthrogryposis and atresia ani was presented for diagnostic evaluation. At necropsy, this fetus had a large amount of ascites, urachal obstruction and marked bladder distention. The ventral surface of the bladder had ruptured and attached to the abdominal wall by fibrinous adhesions. There was bilateral hydronephrosis with moderate pelvic dilatation and cortical attenuation. The rectum was filled with meconium but the anus was imperforate. The right forelimb was contracted. The cause(s) of these abnormalities could not be determined; how

We report on a fetus with cranio-facial anomalies, a narrow thorax, imperforate anus with cloacal cyst, and a genitourinary malformation with absent uterus, vagina, and external genitalia. Major thoracic defects were seen on roentgenographic examination, including absent vertebrae and ribs, a supernumerary vertebra, a hemivertebra, and rib fusion. These findings are compatible with Casamassima-Morton-Nance syndrome. The patient was the carrier of a translocation t(6;9)(p12;q12), inherited from the mother. Although the occurrence of this rearrangement may be coincidental, it may also indicate a

A 13-year-old girl with a history of cloacal anomalies presented with acute abdominal pain. Abdominal ultrasound was not definitive, and vaginal probe ultrasound was precluded by the patient's stenotic vagina. Magnetic resonance imaging delineated a left hematometra and hematosalpinx as well as a more normal-appearing right hemiuterus. Operative laparoscopy was used to lyse the extensive pelvic adhesions in a patient with a history of an imperforate anus and to resect a left rudimentary uterine horn with outflow obstruction. A review of cases in the world literature reveals that operative lapa

This is a report on a child with sensorineural deafness, imperforate anus with rectovaginal fistula, hypoplastic thumb, and congenital heart defect. This pattern of congenital anomalies is similar to that described in patients with the Townes-Brocks syndrome, although the present patient has characteristics that have not been reported previously in this syndrome. It is proposed that the clinical spectrum of the Townes-Brocks syndrome must be extended to include congenital heart defect, auricular changes differing from those previously described, and anomalies of other internal organs. The synd

Significant developments in minimally invasive surgery (MIS) for the adult population have led to increased application of MIS techniques for pediatric patients. Laparoscopy is the most common MIS procedure used in pediatrics. Traditional surgical procedures that are now being performed laparoscopically include gastrostomy, pyloromyotomy, and repair of congenital diaphragmatic hernia and imperforate anus. All perioperative team members must be prepared to provide appropriately sized instruments and equipment to facilitate use of MIS techniques in the pediatric population and must ensure safe p

We describe an 11-year-old boy with facial dysmorphism consisting of a round and flat face, hypertelorism, short nose, and down turned corners of the mouth. In addition, he had severe mental retardation, short stature, imperforate anus, and basilar artery dolichoectasia. Cytogenetic evaluation revealed an unbalanced paternally inherited translocation t(18;20)(p11.2q13.3), resulting in partial monosomy 18p and partial trisomy 20q. The combination of deletion 18pduplication 20q has not been previously described and we suggest that the unusual finding of basilar artery dolichoectasia may be a fea

We report on a new patient with clinical findings consistent with acro-dermato-ungual-lacrimal-tooth (ADULT) syndrome. The child had sparse hair, extensive freckling, lacrimal duct stenosis, oligodontia, dystrophic nails, reduced sweating, and bilateral athelia. Examination of his hands showed ulnar ray hypoplasia with bilateral fifth finger brachydactyly and camptodactyly. He also had surgical repair of an imperforate anus. Mutation analysis of TP63 showed a single nucleotide substitution, c.G518A, predicting a novel missense mutation, p.V114M in exon 4. This is the third mutation to be repor

Pregnant Sprague Dawley rats were separated into two groups. In the experimental group, single intragastric doses of ethylenethiourea (ETU) were given on the 11th day of gestation. In the control group, a single intragastric dose of distilled water was given on the same day of gestation. Fetuses were recovered on day 20 of gestation, and were prepared for dissection and light microscopy. A high incidence of axial dysraphic disorders (omphalocele and rachischisis) and imperforate anus with recto-urethral fistula were noted in experimental male rat fetuses obtained from dams subjected to varying

An infant was found to have the previously known manifestations of the Kaufman syndrome (hydrometrocolpos, postaxial polydactyly, and congenital heart disease) but also imperforate anus, malrotation of gut, congenital hip dislocation, and urogenital sinus. All of these anomalies have been separately reported in other cases of the syndrome. Three previously unreported problems present in this case were choanal atresia, pituitary dysplasia, and vertebral anomalies; these may well be component manifestations of the syndrome and not sporadic occurrences in our patient. Of particular clinical impor

A case of esophageal stenosis and tracheo-esophageal fistula associated with dextrocardia due to dextrorotation, ventricular septal defect and complete double arotic arch is reported. In 116 cases of esophageal atresia and tracheo-esophageal fistula 9 had an associated cardiac malformation (4 right-sided aortic arch and 4 ventricular septal defects). The possible individualization of multiple abnormality syndromes in which these two types of malformations are associated with others such as vertebral arch defects, limb anomalies, imperforate anus, etc. is discussed. These are so-called "Vater"

Conjoined twins occur in up to 1 in 50,000 live births with approximately 18% joined in a pygopagus configuration at the buttocks. Twins with this configuration display symptoms and carry surgical risks during separation related to the extent of their connection which can include anorectal, genitourinary, vertebral, and neural structures. Neurophysiologic intraoperative monitoring for these cases has been discussed in the literature with variable utility. The authors present a case of pygopagus twins with fused spinal cords and imperforate anus where the use of neurophysiologic intraoperative

The combination of lagophthalmia, euryblepharon, ectropion of lower eyelids, distichiasis, bilateral cleft lip and palate, and oligodontia comprises the blepharo-cheilo-dontic (BCD) syndrome. This combination has been found sporadically or with positive family history and inherited as an autosomal dominant condition with variable expression. We described a Saudi boy with the cardinal signs consistent with the BCD syndrome. In addition to the common components of BCD syndrome that involve eyelids, lip, and teeth abnormalities, this patient is the third reported BCD case with imperforate anus, t

A case of trisomy 22 liveborn female baby with multiple congenital anomalies is described. Physical manifestations included failure to thrive, hypotonia, pre-auricular sinus, low set ears, hypertelorism, posterior low hair line, micrognathia, cleft palate, congenital heart disease, imperforated anus with anovulvar fistula, contracted pelvis and bilateral rocker-bottom feet. The infant died at two months of age. Cases of trisomy 22 usually present with many severe malformations, and they rarely survive to term. A review of the literature is presented to delineate this chromosome disorder.
