BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: There is a noticeable gap in diagnostic evidence strength between the thick and thin scans of Low-Dose CT (LDCT) for pulmonary nodule detection. When the thin scans are needed is unknown, especially when aided with an artificial intelligence nodule detection system.
METHODS: A case study is conducted with a set of 1,000 pulmonary nodule screening LDCT scans with both thick (5.0mm), and thin (1.0mm) section scans available. Pulmonary nodule detection is performed by human and artificial intelligence models for nodule detection developed using 3D convolutional neural

Use of the frontal sinuses for identification requires an objective method of comparison to meet Daubert standards. Christensen's application of Elliptical Fourier Analysis and Likelihood Ratios seems to be a viable solution for this problem. The proposed method draws upon this work and attempts to simplify its application. Variation between pairs of digitized sinus tracings was quantified by summing the difference between corresponding measurements taken from a fixed origin to the outer edge of the sinus outlines using Adobe Photoshop CS2. Same-skull and different-skull pairs were used to dev

Advancements in computational technology have led to a shift towards automated detection processes in lung cancer screening, particularly through nodule segmentation techniques. These techniques employ thresholding to distinguish between soft and firm tissues, including cancerous nodules. The challenge of accurately detecting nodules close to critical lung structures such as blood vessels, bronchi, and the pleura highlights the necessity for more sophisticated methods to enhance diagnostic accuracy. This paper proposed combined processing filters for data preparation before using one of the mo

BACKGROUND: Cerebral computed tomography angiography (CTA) has revolutionized the diagnosis of neurovascular emergencies. Strategies to reduce radiation, a concern for cancer, involve tube voltage and current reduction but with increased noise and inferior image quality. Hence, the objective of the study was to evaluate the quality of images obtained through low-dose radiation and low-contrast volume CTA with an iterative reconstruction (IR) technique versus standard CTA without IR.
METHODS: This prospective trial involved 100 adults requiring cerebral CTA for cerebrovascular diseases. They w

The conventional detection of COVID-19 by evaluating the CT scan images is tiresome, often experiences high inter-observer variability and uncertainty issues. This work proposes the automatic detection and classification of COVID-19 by analysing the chest X-ray images (CXR) with the deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) models through a fine-tuning and pre-training approach. CXR images pertaining to four health scenarios, namely, healthy, COVID-19, bacterial pneumonia and viral pneumonia, are considered and subjected to data augmentation. Two types of input datasets are prepared; in which d

BACKGROUND: In this study we have evaluated the accuracy of automatic, deformable structure propagation from planning CT and MR scans for daily online plan adaptation for MR linac (MRL) treatment, which is an important element to minimize re-planning time and reduce the risk of misrepresenting the target due to this time pressure.
METHODS: For 12 high-risk prostate cancer patients treated to the prostate and pelvic lymph nodes, target structures and organs at risk were delineated on both planning MR and CT scans and propagated using deformable registration to three T2 weighted MR scans acquir

Digital tomosynthesis mammography (DTM) is a promising new modality for breast cancer detection. In DTM, projection-view images are acquired at a limited number of angles over a limited angular range and the imaged volume is reconstructed from the two-dimensional projections, thus providing three-dimensional structural information of the breast tissue. In this work, we investigated three representative reconstruction methods for this limited-angle cone-beam tomographic problem, including the backprojection (BP) method, the simultaneous algebraic reconstruction technique (SART) and the maximum

Accurate, simple, and quick measurement of anatomical deformities at preoperative stage is clinically important for decision making in surgery planning. The deformities include excessive torsional, angular, and curvature deformation. This paper presents computer-aided methods for automatically measuring anatomical deformities of long bones of the lower limb. A three-dimensional bone model reconstructed from CT scan data of the patient is used as input. Anatomical landmarks on femur and tibia bone models are automatically identified using geometric algorithms. Medial axes of femur and tibia bon

Airway diseases (e.g., asthma, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis) are extremely common worldwide. Any morphological variations (abnormalities) of airways may physically change airflow and ultimately affect the ability of the lungs in gas exchange. In this study, we describe a novel algorithm aimed to automatically identify airway walls depicted on CT images. The underlying idea is to place a three-dimensional (3D) surface model within airway regions and thereafter allow this model to evolve (deform) under predefined external and internal forces automatically to the location where these forces

A basic assumption in the classic computed tomography (CT) theory is that an object remains stationary in an entire scan. In biomedical CT/micro-CT, this assumption is often violated. To produce high-resolution images, such as for our recently proposed clinical micro-CT (CMCT) prototype, it is desirable to develop a precise motion estimation and image reconstruction scheme. In this paper, we first extend the Helgason-Ludwig consistency condition (HLCC) from parallel-beam to fan-beam geometry when an object is subject to a translation. Then, we propose a novel method to estimate the motion para

PURPOSE: To compare the effects of deep learning image reconstruction (DLIR) and adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction V (ASiR-V) on image quality in low-dose computed tomography (CT) of paranasal sinuses in children.
METHODS: Low-dose CT scans of the paranasal sinuses in 25 pediatric patients were retrospectively evaluated. The raw data were reconstructed with three levels of DLIR (high, H; medium, M; and low, L), filtered back projection (FBP), and ASiR-V (30% and 50%). Image noise was measured in both soft tissue and bone windows, and the signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) and contrast-

Computed tomography (CT) is an important imaging modality. Physicians, surgeons, and oncologists prefer CT scan for diagnosis of lung cancer. However, some nodules are missed in CT scan. Computer aided diagnosis methods are useful for radiologists for detection of these nodules and early diagnosis of lung cancer. Early detection of malignant nodule is helpful for treatment. Computer aided diagnosis of lung cancer involves lung segmentation, potential nodules identification, features extraction from the potential nodules, and classification of the nodules. In this paper, we are presenting an au

Unenhanced spiral computed tomography is now applied in the investigation of patients with acute flank pain to search for suspected urinary tract calculi. Spiral CT can depict urinary calculi more accurately than plain radiographs, sonography or excretory urography, and can be performed using a low dose protocol. Almost all urinary calculi, including calculi composed of uric acid, xanthine and cystine, can be detected. In addition to determining size and location of the stone, unenhanced helical CT can predict its composition. Furthermore, it reveals secondary signs of obstruction, such as dil

This paper addresses two important problems in medical image interpretation:(1) integration of numeric and symbolic information, (2) access to external sources of medical knowledge. We have developed a prototype in which image processing algorithms are combined with symbolic representations for reasoning, decision making and task management in an integrated, platform-independent system for the differential diagnosis of abnormalities in mammograms. The prototype is based on PROforma, a generic technology for building decision support systems based on clinical guidelines. The PROforma language d

Artificial intelligence plays an essential role in diagnosing lung cancer. Lung cancer is notoriously difficult to diagnose until it has progressed to a late stage, making it a leading cause of cancer-related mortality. Lung cancer is fatal if not treated early, making this a significant issue. Initial diagnosis of malignant nodules is often made using chest radiography (X-ray) and computed tomography (CT) scans; nevertheless, the possibility of benign nodules leads to wrong choices. In their first phases, benign and malignant nodules seem very similar. Additionally, radiologists have a hard t

Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) encompasses a wide array of diseases that share some common radiologic characteristics. When diagnosing such diseases, radiologists can be affected by heavy workload and fatigue thus decreasing diagnostic accuracy. Automatic segmentation is the first step in implementing a Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD) that will help radiologists to improve diagnostic accuracy thereby reducing manual interpretation. Automatic segmentation proposed uses an initial thresholding and morphology based segmentation coupled with feedback that detects large deviations with a corrective

Abnormal nodular branching opacities at the lung periphery in Chest Computed Tomography (CT) are termed by radiology literature as tree-in-bud (TIB) opacities. These subtle opacity differences represent pulmonary disease in the small airways such as infectious or inflammatory bronchiolitis. Precisely quantifying the detection and measurement of TIB abnormality using computer assisted detection (CAD) would assist clinical and research investigation of this pathology commonly seen in pulmonary infections. This paper presents a novel method for automatically detecting TIB patterns based on fast l
