Dysphagia lusoria (DL) is a rare clinical entity caused by compression of the esophagus by an aberrant right subclavian artery. It is coined from the Latin word meaning freak or jest of nature, with an estimated prevalence of approximately 0.5%. Before the term DL was known, the artery abnormality was referred to as luxus nature. Most patients are asymptomatic. In 30-40% of cases, DL results in tracheoesophageal symptoms like dysphagia to solid foods, chest pain, cough, and Horner's syndrome. Symptoms presenting later in life have been linked to arteriosclerosis and diminishing esophageal comp

OBJECTIVE: Swallowing is a unique movement due to the indispensable orchestration of voluntary and involuntary movements. The transition from voluntary to involuntary swallowing is executed within milliseconds. We hypothesized that the underlying neural mechanism of swallowing would be revealed by high-frequency cortical activities.
METHODS: Eight epileptic participants fitted with intracranial electrodes over the orofacial cortex were asked to swallow a water bolus and cortical oscillatory changes, including the high γ band (75-150 Hz) and β band (13-30 Hz), were investigated at the time of

OBJECTIVE: In the evaluation of oropharyngeal dysphagia, instrumental procedures, for example, flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing or videofluoroscopic swallowing study, are essential to improve diagnostic accuracy for salient findings such as penetration, aspiration, or pharyngeal residue. To date, it is unclear which of the 2 methods represents the diagnostic gold standard. The aim of this study, therefore, was to compare videofluoroscopy and swallowing endoscopy during a simultaneous swallowing examination in a large cohort of patients with oropharyngeal dysphagia.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease, and swallowing difficulties may occur as the disease progresses. Dysphagia has many consequences, such as aspiration and pneumonia. In particular, in the advanced stage, approximately 70% of the causes of death in AD involve aspiration pneumonia. Therefore, it is vital to assess the presence or absence of dysphagia in AD.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to describe swallowing difficulty across the stages of AD.
METHODS: Thirty-five AD patients were evaluated. The Mini-Mental State Examination was conducted. A bedside

A 49-year-old woman presented as an acute admission with persistent vomiting and an inability to tolerate both solids and liquids. Five weeks prior to the admission she had an Elipse swallowable intragastric balloon placed into her stomach as an aid to weight loss. This type of balloon stays inflated inside the stomach for 16 weeks before disintegrating and passing through the gastrointestinal tract. Observations and blood parameters were unremarkable but abdominal radiograph indicated that the balloon had undergone spontaneous hyperinflation-a rare complication. At gastroscopy, the balloon wa

INTRODUCTION: X-linked Dystonia-Parkinsonism (XDP) is a progressive, disabling disease characterized by the devastating impairment of bulbar function, including speech and swallowing. Despite these detrimental impacts, bulbar impairments in this population are not well characterized.
OBJECTIVES: To identify impairments in the bulbar system measured by oromotor performance in individuals with XDP relative to healthy controls. Secondarily, to detect diagnostic bulbar markers that are sensitive and specific to the initial years of XDP.
METHODS: This case-control study included 25 healthy contro

AIM: Dentures play an important role in improving masticatory and oropharyngeal swallowing functions in some edentulous patients without dysphagia. However, few studies have been conducted on patients with dysphagia. This study investigated the effect of dentures on pharyngeal swallowing function in patients with dysphagia.
METHODS: Older inpatients with dysphagia who used well-fitting dentures were included in the study. Videofluoroscopic swallowing study findings with and without dentures were compared. Pharyngeal residue and area as spatial, the distance between the maxilla and mandible, h

This systematic review summarizes published studies on the effect of cranial nerve stimulation (CNS) on swallowing and determines the level of evidence of the included studies to guide the development of future research on new treatment strategies for oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) using CNS. Studies published between January 1990 and October 2019 were found via a systematic comprehensive electronic database search using PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library. Two independent reviewers screened all articles based on the title and abstract using strict inclusion criteria. They independently scr

BACKGROUND: Hypokinetic dysarthria and dysphagia are known features of Parkinson's disease; however, self-perception of their handicapping effects on emotional, physical, and functional aspects of quality of life over disease duration is less understood.
OBJECTIVE: 1) Based upon patient self-perception, to determine the relationship of the handicapping effects of dysphagia and dysphonia with time since diagnosis in individuals with Parkinson's disease; 2)To determine if there is a relationship between voice and swallowing handicap throughout the course of Parkinson's disease.

Tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) is an abnormal connection between the trachea and esophagus. Rare acquired TEF arises from trauma, caustic fluids ingestion, and iatrogenic injuries (ventilation, esophageal atresia repair, radiation, or tracheal/esophageal stents). We discuss the diagnosis, anesthetic management, and surgical correction of battery swallow-induced TEF, not previously reported in the pediatric anesthesia and otorhinolaryngology literatures.

PURPOSE: Within-individual pharyngeal swallowing pressure variability differs among pharyngeal regions in healthy individuals and increases with age. It remains unknown if pharyngeal pressure variability is impacted by volitional swallowing tasks. We hypothesized that pressure variability would increase during volitional swallowing maneuvers and differ among pharyngeal regions depending on the type of swallowing task being performed.
METHOD: Pharyngeal high-resolution manometry was used to record swallowing pressure data from 156 healthy participants during liquid (5 cc) or saliva swallows, a…

Purpose Ultrasound imaging offers a noninvasive adjunct to clinical swallowing assessment. Published reliability of sophisticated ultrasound systems is promising; however, no data exist for reliability using more affordable, pocket-sized devices. This study explored intrarater, interrater, and test-retest reliability of swallowing measures acquired with pocket-sized ultrasound technology. Method Five participants collected measures of swallowing from 20 healthy individuals using the Clarius ultrasound. Hyoid excursion and thyrohyoid approximation were derived during saliva, liquid, and puree s

BACKGROUND: Pharyngeal residue can trigger aspiration and choking after swallowing. Various studies to assess the amount of pharyngeal residue have been conducted; however, an easy and quantitative method is yet to be established. The aroma released from the pharyngeal residue is thought to be delivered from the pharynx to the nasal cavity via velopharynx by expiration, that is, retronasal pathway.
OBJECTIVE: This study verified that the amount of pharyngeal residue could be estimated by aroma intensity.
METHODS: Ten healthy adult subjects had tubes in from the oral cavity to the pharynx. Va

PURPOSE: This study clarified the oral factors related to swallowing function using the results of dental check-ups among community-dwelling independent elders.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data on oral and medical health check-ups from 4,676 participants aged 75 and 80 years were analysed. Swallowing function was evaluated using the repetitive saliva swallowing test (RSST), which assesses the ability to swallow saliva. Swallowing three or more times during a 30 s period was recorded as normal, while swallowing twice or less in 30 s was considered to indicate swallowing difficulty. Multivariate log

Arousals vary considerably in their f … luenced cardiac autonomic activity and cortical arousal from sleep. We found, in all subjects, that swallows trigger rapid, robust, and patterned tachycardia conserved across wake, sleep, and arousal states. Tachycardia onset was temporally matched to glottic adduction-the first phase of swallow motor program. Multiple swallows increase the magnitude of ta …

OBJECTIVES: Laryngomalacia (LM) is commonly diagnosed in infants and children with upper aerodigestive symptoms. In the literature, the focus has been on the respiratory impairment, with fewer studies addressing swallowing dysfunction (SwD). The objective of this study is to systematically review the literature for evidence on the prevalence of SwD in children diagnosed with LM.
METHODS: A search was conducted on the following databases: OVID Medline, Ovid EMBASE, EBSCO CINAHL, PROSPERO, and Cochrane Library. We included all the studies that reported on children with LM and documented objecti

Rare Cause for Difficulty in Swallowing with Neck Swelling - Paraganglioma Abstract. Pain-free lateral swelling of the neck should be taken seriously and promptly clarified by using sonography. If a cervical paraganglioma is suspected, an interdisciplinary clarification should be initiated. In addition to an MRI of the neck, a vascular-surgical, an ENT specialist and an endocrinological examination should be carried out. If there is a high degree of suspicion of a carotid body tumor, surgical removal or a prospective procedure should be used in accordance with the Shamblin classification, the

BACKGROUND: It is generally accepted that achalasia is limited to the pathology of the esophageal body and lower esophageal sphincter. However, patients with achalasia still have symptoms such as aspiration and weight loss after even a succesfull treatment, suggesting that additional oropharyngeal pathologies may be frequent in patients with achalasia.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to assess the oropharyngeal/hypopharyngeal swallowing functions of patients with naive-achalasia.
METHODS: We evaluated the oropharyngeal functions with fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES)
