Optical coherence tomography angiography in the diagnosis of ocular disease.

Clinical imaging provided by optical coherence tomography (OCT) and its variant, OCT-angiography (OCT-A), has revolutionised eyecare practice. The imaging techniques allow for the identification and quantification of ocular structures, supporting the diagnosis and prognosis of eye disease. In this review, an overview of the usefulness of OCT-A imaging in the diagnosis and management of a range of ocular conditions is provided when used in isolation or in combination with other imaging modalities and measures of visual function (visual field results). OCT-A imaging has the capacity to identify

Identification of the Vibrational Optical Coherence Tomography Corneal Cellular Peak.

PURPOSE: Our team previously identified the presence of five corneal resonant frequency (RF) peaks in healthy volunteers using vibrational optical coherence tomography (VOCT). Prior studies have suggested that the ≤100 Hz RF peak represents the cellular element of tissue. The aim of this study was to confirm that this peak reflects the human corneal cellular component using VOCT and histological analysis. METHODS: Two human research globes were obtained from the same donor, and VOCT measurements were collected from the full-thickness corneas. A microkeratome was then used to create serial-fre

Endoscopic optical coherence tomography angiography using an externally driving catheter.

Endoscopic optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an imaging modality that enables cross-sectional subsurface imaging of tubular organs and cavities. Recently, endoscopic OCT angiography (OCTA) was successfully achieved in distal scanning systems using an internal-motor-driving catheter. In conventional OCT systems using externally driving catheters, the mechanical instability in the proximal actuation causes difficulties for differentiating capillaries in tissues. In this study, OCTA in an endoscopic OCT system using an external-motor-driving catheter was proposed. Blood vessels were visualize

NORMAL PERIPHERAL CHOROIDAL THICKNESS MEASURED BY WIDEFIELD OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY.

PURPOSE: Choroidal stasis plays an important role in the pathogenesis of many conditions and leads to choroidal thickening. However, the normal peripheral choroidal thickness (PCT) pattern remains unknown. This study investigated PCT and associated factors using ultrawidefield optical coherence tomography in healthy eyes. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 120 healthy eyes (57 males; age, 52.0 ± 20.5 years). We used choroidal thickness maps created by ultrawidefield optical coherence tomography (viewing angle, 200°) with real-shape correction. The peripheral area was defined from 60

Case Report: Optical coherence tomography angiography findings in radiation retinopathy.

We reported the observation of a 31-year-old female followed for a nasopharyngeal carcinoma since 2009, treated by locoregional radiotherapy, with a cumulative dose of 75 Gray. The patient presented with a progressive decline in bilateral vision. Ophthalmologic examination revealed bilateral dry eye, posterior subcapsular cataract, radiation retinopathy, and optic neuropathy. The patient presented all ocular complications of radiotherapy. The most severe was radiation retinopathy. Performing optic coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) earlier could have speeded up the diagnosis and led to a

Multimodal imaging of torpedo maculopathy with optical coherence tomography angiography.

A 24-year-old woman presented for routine clinical evaluation. Her best-corrected visual acuity was 20/20 and slit-lamp examination of the anterior segment was normal in both eyes. Fundus examination of the left eye revealed a hypopigmented lesion, one disc diameter temporal to the fovea, with a hyperpigmented tail extending temporally from the main lesion, consistent with a torpedo maculopathy. Fundus autofluorescence showed an hypoautofluorescence with hyperautofluorescent border. Swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT) showed a normal inner retina and a degeneration of the outer ret

Deep learning in optical coherence tomography: Where are the gaps?

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive optical imaging modality, which provides rapid, high-resolution and cross-sectional morphology of macular area and optic nerve head for diagnosis and managing of different eye diseases. However, interpreting OCT images requires experts in both OCT images and eye diseases since many factors such as artefacts and concomitant diseases can affect the accuracy of quantitative measurements made by post-processing algorithms. Currently, there is a growing interest in applying deep learning (DL) methods to analyse OCT images automatically. This revi

Clinical Use of Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography in Retinal Diseases.

The advent of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is one of the cornerstones of fundus imaging. Essentially, its mechanism depends on the visualization of blood vessels by using the flow of erythrocytes as an intrinsic contrast agent. Although it has only recently come into clinical use, OCTA has become a non-invasive diagnostic tool for the diagnosis and follow-up of many retinal diseases, and the integration of OCTA in multimodal imaging has provided a better understanding of many retinal disorders. Here, we provide a detailed overview of the current applications of OCTA technolo

The use of optical coherence tomography in neurology: a review.

Optical coherence tomography is a non-invasive, cost-efficient technique that provides high-resolution in vivo imaging of retinal tissue. The peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer and macular ganglion cell complex are surrogate markers of neuroaxonal integrity in not only the eye, but also the CNS. Retinal atrophy may occur in tandem with CNS pathologies as a result of injury to ganglion cells, direct degeneration of the pregeniculate pathway, or retrograde trans-synaptic degeneration secondary to postgeniculate lesions. In this review, we outline the basic principles of optical coherence to

Use of optical coherence tomography angiography in the uveitis clinic.

As optical coherence tomography angiography is revolutionizing the ophthalmology world, the uveitis community is learning to understand where and how this new powerful imaging tool fits into the management of the panorama of ocular inflammations and infections. A non-invasive method of studying the retinal and choroidal vasculature, OCTA allows for the assessment of vessel density changes during active and inactive uveitis making it the natural imaging application of choice in uveitis clinical trials. However, these data and results are of limited utility to the ophthalmologists who are lookin
