Autopsy reports of individuals with Shah-Waardenburg syndrome are rare, and to the best of our knowledge, have never been reported in association with Dandy-Walker malformation. This report documents the autopsy findings of a 2.5-year-old boy with Shah-Waardenburg syndrome (Type IV Waardenburg syndrome) and a Dandy-Walker malformation. The patient had a past medical history of congenital deafness, skin and hair pigmentary disturbances, Hirschsprun disease and hydrocephalus. At autopsy, multiple patches of dermal and hair hypopigmentation were observed over the face, trunk, eyelashes and eyebro

A neonate presented with Dandy-Walker syndrome manifesting as a large posterior cranial fossa cyst, aplasia of the lower cerebellar vermis, and elevation of the confluence of the sinuses but without hydrocephalus. A cystoperitoneal shunt was placed at one month after birth. The cyst diminished in size, and marked development of the cerebellar hemispheres and descent of the confluence of sinuses were observed, but not vermis development. The primary pathology of Dandy-Walker syndrome is posterior cranial fossa cyst formation due to passage obstruction in the fourth ventricle exit area and aplas…

Key features of Joubert syndrome include developmental delay, hypotonia, hyperpnea and apnea, oculomotor apraxia, and the presence of the molar tooth sign on axial imaging through the brainstem isthmus--the junction of the pons and mesencephalon. Interestingly, 1 in 10 patients with Joubert syndrome has abnormal cerebrospinal fluid collections misdiagnosed as Dandy-Walker variants. Because of important differences in patient management, genetic counseling, and prognosis between these conditions, we undertook a study to determine if the brainstem isthmus is normal in Dandy-Walker syndrome. Usin…

This submission presents a case of scoliosis in a patient with established Dandy-Walker anomaly of the brain. A retrospective review of the patient's case notes was undertaken and the limited literature on this subject reviewed. The 13-year-old girl presented with a stiff right thoracic scoliosis typical of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. The scoliotic segment also presented with significant lordosis. She had facial and truncal dysmorphism characteristic of Dandy-Walker complex and her brain images confirmed the diagnosis. She underwent scoliosis surgery by the posterior approach uneventfully

Hydrolethalus syndrome consists of hydrocephalus, polydactyly, micrognathia, midcranial malformations, visceral abnormalities and perinatal lethality. It was first described in Finland, and only a few other cases outside Scandinavia are known. We report the first Hungarian patient who displayed many signs of the syndrome but had no cleft lip and visceral abnormalities. This observation suggests the existence of oligosymptomic hydrolethalus syndrome, and suggests that Dandy-Walker malformation with polydactyly may be a manifestation of the hydrolethalus syndrome.

Thirty-five patients with the Dandy-Walker syndrome (DWS) treated over the years 1964-1987 at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, were reviewed. Thirty-three patients (94%) had hydrocephalus at the time of diagnosis. The primary association of aqueduct stenosis was excluded by radiological investigation and clinical course in all patients. Associated central nervous system (CNS) anomalies were present in 10 patients. Seven had occipital encephalocele and in 1 of these there was an associated Klippel-Feil syndrome. Four patients had agenesis of the corpus callosum and 1 patient had polypor…

Dandy-Walker syndrome (DWS) is a group of brain malformations which sometimes present with psychotic symptoms. We present the case of a patient diagnosed with Dandy-Walker variant who presented with schizophrenia-like psychosis. A man in his 30s was admitted to an acute psychiatric unit presenting with persecutory delusions, auditory hallucinations and violent behaviour. The MRI performed showed the typical alterations of Dandy-Walker variant: vermian hypoplasia and cystic dilatation of the fourth ventricle. He also suffered from mild intellectual disability. After being treated with olanzapin…

Ligneous conjunctivitis (LC) is a rare form of pseudomembranous conjunctivitis seen in children, perhaps due to plasminogen deficiency, whic … conjunctivitis in conjunction with progressive congenital hydrocephalus due to aqueductal stenosis (Dandy-Walker syndrome). This rare association was clinically confirmed and prompt corrective surgical measures were instituted.

Trisomy 18 is a genetic disease resulting from an extra chromosome 18, characterized by a broad clinical spectrum, poor prognosis and low rates of survival. This is the case of a 12 year-old girl diagnosed with full trisomy 18, and multiple malformations, including Dandy-Walker Syndrome and congenital heart defects on long term survival. At nine months, a new echocardiogram showed a double outlet right ventricle, significant pulmonary stenosis, patent ductus arteriosus and ventricular septal defect. Cardiac surgery was performed at one year and seven months. Early surgical intervention and mul…

Ellis-Van Creveld (EvC) syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive chondroectodermal dysplasia including chondrodysplasia, postaxial polydactyly, ectodermal dysplasia, and congenital heart disease in 60% of patients. Additional findings may be observed affecting the pulmonary, renal, gastrointestinal, hematologic, and central nervous systems. We report a case of an 11-year-old Moroccan boy with EVC syndrome and Dandy-Walker malformation. To our knowledge, this association has been previously reported in 3 patients in the literature.

To describe a case of bilateral cystoid macular edema in a patient with Dandy-Walker syndrome. An 18-year-old male was referred to our tertiary referral center for evaluation of his decreased visual acuity. Detailed ophthalmic examination and imaging revealed the presence of bilateral cystoid macular edema, which was successfully treated with intravitreal triamcinolone injections (2 mg in 0.05 ml). Recurrence of macular edema developed after a period of approximately four months. This is an unusual ophthalmic manifestation of Dandy-Walker syndrome. Cystoid macular edema should be included in t…

INTRODUCTION: We report an isolated pedigree in which a consanguineous couple had twin sons with Dandy-Walker malformation (DWM). The mother is similarly affected with the disorder.
DISCUSSION: DWM is an abnormality of the central nervous system, which leads to hydrocephalus and is associated with other abnormalities.
CONCLUSION: Inheritance of the disorder remains controversial, with the majority perceived to be sporadic cases. This report suggests an autosomal inheritance.

Twelve patients between the years of 1964 and 1971 underwent surgical treatment for the so-called Dandy-Walker syndrome at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Five patients belonged to an early group (1-8 weeks); four patients to an intermediary group (3-20 months); and a late group consisted of three patients (3 years, 14 years and 34 years). The value of the various diagnostic studies is discussed on the basis of an analysis of the plain skull X-rays, cerebral angiograms, and combined air studies. The importance of a careful delineation of the underlying pathological condition is stressed to enable …

A 6-year-old girl presented with recurrent infections, seizures, regression of milestones, silvery hair and organomegaly. A diagnosis of Griscelli syndrome with unusual features of a Dandy Walker cyst and hypergammaglobulinemia, not previously described in literature, was made. The child was treated with supportive measures.

Dandy-Walker syndrome (DWS) is characterized by cystic dilatation of the 4th ventricle and absence of the cerebellar vermis. There may also be posterior fossa enlargement, hydrocephalus, hypoplastic cerebellar hemispheres and other malformations within and outside the central nervous system (CNS). The condition is uncommon, and the incidence is unknown. We studied the incidence of DWS in a defined Saudi Arabian population of military personnel and their dependants. We identified all patients diagnosed with DWS during an 11-year period (1989-1999) from a cohort of 45,274 live births. The incide…
