A Metric for Reducing False Positives in the Computer-Aided Detection of Breast Cancer from Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging Based Screening Examinations of High-Risk Women.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-enabled cancer screening has been shown to be a highly sensitive method for the early detection of breast cancer. Computer-aided detection systems have the potential to improve the screening process by standardizing radiologists to a high level of diagnostic accuracy. This retrospective study was approved by the institutional review board of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. This study compares the performance of a proposed method for computer-aided detection (based on the second-order spatial derivative of the relative signal intensity) with the signal enhanc

Detection of obstructive uropathy and assessment of differential renal function using two functional magnetic resonance urography tools. A comparison with diuretic renal scintigraphy in infants and children.

AIM: After detection of obstructive uropathy (OU), the indication for or against surgery is primarily based on the differential renal function (DRF). This is to compare functional magnetic resonance urography (fMRU) with dynamic renal scintigraphy (DRS) to assess OU and DRF in infants and children. PATIENTS, METHODS: Retrospective analysis in 30 patients (female: 16; male: 14; median age: 5.5 years [0.2-16.5]), divided into subgroup A (age: 0-2 years; n = 16) and B (> 2-17 years; n = 14). fMRU was assessed by measuring renal transit time (RTT) and volumetric DRF with CHOP fMRU tool (CT) and I

T1-Weighted Magnetic Resonance Carotid Plaque Imaging: a Comparison between Conventional and Fast Spin-Echo Techniques.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging is widely used to evaluate the intraplaque components of the cervical carotid artery. The non-gated T1-weighted spin-echo (SE) technique has been reported to have an excellent ability for discriminating stable and unstable plaques. However, the diagnostic performance of various SE-based techniques remains unclear. Hence, we compared plaque signals obtained by 3 kinds of SE-based methods with histological findings. METHODS: We prospectively examined 40 patients who underwent carotid endarterectomy by using 1.5-T scanners and obtained 2-dimensional (2D) co

Comparison of native high-resolution 3D and contrast-enhanced MR angiography for assessing the thoracic aorta.

AIMS: To omit risks of contrast agent administration, native magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) is desired for assessing the thoracic aorta. The aim was to evaluate a native steady-state free precession (SSFP) three-dimensional (3D) MRA in comparison with contrast-enhanced MRA as the gold standard. METHODS AND RESULTS: Seventy-six prospective patients with known or suspicion of thoracic aortic disease underwent MRA at 1.5 T using (i) native 3D SSFP MRA with ECG and navigator gating and high isotropic spatial resolution (1.3 × 1.3 × 1.3 mm(3)) and (ii) conventional contrast-enhanced ECG-gate

Cloves syndrome: a case report and perinatal diagnostic findings.

We report a neonate with prenatal ultrasound imaging features suggestive of CLOVES syndrome, confirmed postnatally by clinical and imaging findings of the constellation of truncal overgrowth, cutaneous capillary malformations, lymphatic and musculoskeletal anomalies. The clinical, radiological and histopathological findings noted in our patient help differentiate from other overgrowth syndromes such as Proteus syndrome. We report perinatal findings and add new clinical findings of this rare syndrome.

Magnetic resonance imaging of the sacroiliac joints in patients with suspected spondyloarthritis--comparison of turbo spin-echo and gradient-echo sequences for the detection of structural alterations.

PURPOSE: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the method of choice for the evaluation of spondyloarthritis (SpA). According to the guidelines of the Assessment of Spondyloarthritis International Society (ASAS) and Outcome Measures in Rheumatology (OMERACT), MRI findings in SpA of the spine and the sacroiliac joints (SIJ) are classified as inflammatory and structural alterations. Modern gradient-echo sequences (GRE) are recommended for optimized detection of structural alterations of the SIJ. We assess the benefit of GRE in the detection of structural alterations of the SIJ in comparison to conv

Evaluating automated dynamic contrast enhanced wrist 3T MRI in healthy volunteers: one-year longitudinal observational study.

RATIONAL AND OBJECTIVE: Dynamic contrast enhanced (DCE)-MRI has great potential to provide quantitative measure of inflammatory activity in rheumatoid arthritis. There is no current benchmark to establish the stability of signal in the joints of healthy subjects when imaged with DCE-MRI longitudinally, which is crucial so as to differentiate changes induced by treatment from the inherent variability of perfusion measures. The objective of this study was to test a pixel-by-pixel parametric map based approach for analysis of DCE-MRI (Dynamika) and to investigate the variability in signal charact

Time-efficient simultaneous fat and water cardiac cine imaging using spiral magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac cine imaging is routinely used in patient with suspected or known cardiac dysfunction. Water and fat (W/F) separated cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) will be helpful to distinguish adipose tissue, blood, and myocardium. Inclusion of a multi-echo acquisition in the conventional balanced steady-state free precession (bSSFP) cine sequence can introduce artifacts and reduce temporal resolution. Spiral MRI is known for its signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) efficiency and has the potential to improve temporal efficiency for W/F separated cine imaging. The present work implements
