Does dual-energy CT of lower-extremity tendons incur penalties in patient radiation exposure or reduced multiplanar reconstruction image quality?

OBJECTIVE: The purposes of this study were to evaluate the quality and radiation exposure of data acquired with dual-energy CT compared with single-energy MDCT in the depiction of lower-extremity tendons and to assess whether a dual-energy CT voltage exists at which the quality of tendon depiction is optimal. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Eleven healthy volunteers and seven clinically referred patients (10 men, eight women; mean age, 43.1 years; range, 20-71 years) underwent conventional single-energy CT and dual-energy CT examinations of both lower extremities with a dual-source CT scanner. Dual-ene

The value of quantifying 18F-FDG uptake in thyroid nodules found incidentally on whole-body PET-CT.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if quantification of [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) uptake in a thyroid nodule found incidentally on whole-body 18F-FDG positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) can be used to discriminate between malignant and benign aetiology. METHODS: A retrospective review of all patients with focally high uptake in the thyroid as an incidental finding on 18F-FDG PET-CT from May 2003 through May 2006. The uptake in the nodules was quantified using the maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax). The aetiology was determined by cytology and/or ultrasound, or on hi

A simple technique for improving camera displacement estimation in eye-in-hand visual servoing.

A simple technique for estimating the camera displacement from point correspondences in eye-in-hand visual servoing is presented. The idea for providing more accurate results than existing methods consists of taking into account that the point correspondences used during the camera motion correspond to stationary spatial points, hence exploiting additional information. This is done by first estimating the object Euclidean structure and then estimating the camera displacement from this estimate.

Computerized analysis of mammographic parenchymal patterns for breast cancer risk assessment: feature selection.

Our purpose in this study was to identify computer-extracted, mammographic parenchymal patterns that are associated with breast cancer risk. We extracted 14 features from the central breast region on digitized mammograms to characterize the mammographic parenchymal patterns of women at different risk levels. Two different approaches were employed to relate these mammographic features to breast cancer risk. In one approach, the features were used to distinguish mammographic patterns seen in low-risk women from those who inherited a mutated form of the BRCA1/BRCA2 gene, which confers a very high

The CT colonography radiology and data system: history, updates, and future directions.

Computed tomography colonography, also known as virtual colonoscopy, is a minimally invasive imaging technique developed in the early 1990s to evaluate the colon for polyps, cancer, and other abnormalities. Advances in multidetector computed tomography, bowel preparation protocols, and three-dimensional reconstruction rapidly improved diagnostic performance. Landmark trials demonstrating sensitivity for clinically significant adenomas comparable to optical colonoscopy led to its acceptance as a colorectal cancer screening option. Standardized reporting further accelerated clinical uptake. The

Contrastive Cross-Site Learning With Redesigned Net for COVID-19 CT Classification.

The pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has lead to a global public health crisis spreading hundreds of countries. With the continuous growth of new infections, developing automated tools for COVID-19 identification with CT image is highly desired to assist the clinical diagnosis and reduce the tedious workload of image interpretation. To enlarge the datasets for developing machine learning methods, it is essentially helpful to aggregate the cases from different medical systems for learning robust and generalizable models. This paper proposes a novel joint learning framework to per

Development of machine learning support for reading whole body diffusion-weighted MRI (WB-MRI) in myeloma for the detection and quantification of the extent of disease before and after treatment (MALIMAR): protocol for a cross-sectional diagnostic test accuracy study.

INTRODUCTION: Whole-body MRI (WB-MRI) is recommended by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence as the first-line imaging tool for diagnosis of multiple myeloma. Reporting WB-MRI scans requires expertise to interpret and can be challenging for radiologists who need to meet rapid turn-around requirements. Automated computational tools based on machine learning (ML) could assist the radiologist in terms of sensitivity and reading speed and would facilitate improved accuracy, productivity and cost-effectiveness. The MALIMAR study aims to develop and validate a ML algorithm to increase the d

Improving perfusion quantification in arterial spin labeling for delayed arrival times by using optimized acquisition schemes.

OBJECTIVE: The improvement in Arterial Spin Labeling (ASL) perfusion quantification, especially for delayed bolus arrival times (BAT), with an acquisition redistribution scheme mitigating the T1 decay of the label in multi-TI ASL measurements is investigated. A multi inflow time (TI) 3D-GRASE sequence is presented which adapts the distribution of acquisitions accordingly, by keeping the scan time constant. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The MR sequence increases the number of averages at long TIs and decreases their number at short TIs and thus compensating the T1 decay of the label. The improvement o

Use of a three-dimensional, normative database of pediatric craniofacial morphology for modern anthropometric analysis.

BACKGROUND: Surgical correction of cranial abnormalities, including craniosynostosis, requires knowledge of normal skull shape to appreciate dysmorphic variations. However, the inability of current anthropometric techniques to adequately characterize three-dimensional cranial shape severely limits morphologic study. The authors previously introduced three-dimensional vector analysis, a quantitative method that maps cranial form from computed tomography data. In this article, the authors report its role in the development and validation of a normative database of pediatric cranial morphology an
