Comparison of Forced Oscillation Technique, Lung Volumes by Body Plethysmography, and Spirometry in Moderate Persistent Adult Asthma.

BACKGROUND: Spirometry is used extensively, but airway oscillometry is gaining acceptance for evaluating obstructive airway disorders. Moderate persistent asthma requires daily treatment with inhaled corticosteroids (ICS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We aimed to examine the relationship between airway oscillometry and lung volumes, which are the markers of lung physiology in obstructive airway disease and spirometry in the real-world clinical setting. A total of 72 adults with moderate persistent asthma followed up in our outpatient department from November 2021 to August 2022, and their clinical

BreathFinder: A Method for Non-Invasive Isolation of Respiratory Cycles Utilizing the Thoracic Respiratory Inductance Plethysmography Signal.

INTRODUCTION: The field of automatic respiratory analysis focuses mainly on breath detection on signals such as audio recordings, or nasal flow measurement, which suffer from issues with background noise and other disturbances. Here we introduce a novel algorithm designed to isolate individual respiratory cycles on a thoracic respiratory inductance plethysmography signal using the non-invasive signal of the respiratory inductance plethysmography belts. PURPOSE: The algorithm locates breaths using signal processing and statistical methods on the thoracic respiratory inductance plethysmography

Endothelial Function Assessed by Digital Volume Plethysmography Predicts the Development and Progression of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

Background Endothelial dysfunction is a consequence of type 2 diabetes mellitus, but it is unclear whether endothelial dysfunction of conductance versus resistance vessels may also precede type 2 diabetes mellitus development. Methods and Results In a population-based cohort of 15 010 individuals from the GHS (Gutenberg Health Study) (aged 35-74 years at enrollment in 2007-2012), we identified 1610 cases of incident pre-diabetes mellitus and 386 cases of incident type 2 diabetes mellitus by hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and/or medical history between 2012 and 2017. Endothelial function of conductance

Body composition measurement by air displacement plethysmography in pregnancy: Comparison of predicted versus measured thoracic gas volume.

OBJECTIVES: Body composition measurements with air displacement plethysmography (ADP) define body volume, which must be corrected for thoracic gas volume (TGV). We hypothesized that physiologic changes owing to pregnancy could affect the accuracy of predicted TGV and introduce errors into body composition measurements. METHODS: We investigated the effect of measuring versus predicting TGV on the accuracy of body composition calculations measured with ADP in overweight and obese pregnant women. The fat and fat-free masses of 110 women were determined with ADP with predicted and measured TGV.

Does unrestrained single-chamber plethysmography provide a valid assessment of airway responsiveness in allergic BALB/c mice?

BACKGROUND: Unrestrained plethysmography has been used to monitor bronchoconstriction because of its ease of use and ability to measure airway responsiveness in conscious animals. However, its reliability remains controversial. OBJECTIVE: To investigate if unrestrained plethysmography could provide a valid interpretation of airway responsiveness in allergic BALB/c mice. METHODS: Ovalbumin sensitized BALB/c mice were randomized to receive either a single-dose Ovalbumin challenge (OVA-1D group) or a three-dose Ovalbumin challenge (OVA-3D group). The OVA-1D group was further divided into OVA-1D

Diagnosis of deep-vein thrombosis: comparison of clinical evaluation, ultrasound, plethysmography, and venoscan with X-ray venogram.

In 50 patients with suspected deep-vein thrombosis the diagnostic accuracy of standardised clinical examination, doppler ultrasound, impedance plethysmography, and technetium-99m-labelled-fibrinogen scintigraphy (venoscan) was compared with that of X-ray venography. Physical examination was the least accurate method. Impedance plethysmography, venoscan, and ultrasound had accuracies of 65%, 80%, and 82%, respectively. The initial X-ray venogram report had an accuracy of 90% compared with the interpretation of two experienced radiologists. The venoscan was equivocal in 32% of patients, and in t

The use of plethysmography in determining the severity of lung pathology in a mouse model of minimally lethal influenza virus infection.

To characterize the impact on lung function, we assessed plethysmography parameters in a course of infection with mouse-adapted A/Pennsylvania/14/2010 (H3N2) influenza virus. Several parameters, represented by enhanced pause (penh) and ratio of inspiratory/expiratory time (Ti/Te), were observed that had early (1-7dpi) and robust changes regardless of virus challenge dose. Other parameters, characterized by tidal volume (TV), breathing frequency (freq) and end inspiratory pause (EIP), changed later (7-15dpi) during the course of infection and had a virus challenge dose effect. A third category

Newborn adiposity measured by plethysmography is not predicted by late gestation two-dimensional ultrasound measures of fetal growth.

Noninvasive measures of fetal and neonatal body composition may provide early identification of children at risk for obesity. Air displacement plethysmography provides a safe, precise measure of adiposity and has recently been validated in infants. Therefore, we explored relationships between term newborn percent body fat (%BF) measured by air displacement plethysmography to 2-dimensional ultrasound (2-D US) biometric measures of fetal growth and maternal and umbilical cord endocrine activity. A total of 47 mother/infant pairs were studied. Fetal biometrics by 2-D US and maternal blood samples

Volume-pressure analysis of reflex changes in forearm venous function. A method by mental arithmetic stress and radionuclide plethysmography.

Mental arithmetic stress is known to cause forearm arterial dilation, but the venous responses, including possible changes in the volume-pressure relation, have not been defined. Hence, 10 apparently normal subjects, eight men and two women, mean age 46 +/- 9 years, were studied before and during mental arithmetic stress. Changes in forearm venous volume were estimated with 99mTc blood pool scintigraphy. Group variability of this measurement technique was 1.8 +/- 2.3%. A brachial blood pressure cuff was used to obtain venous occluding pressures of 0, 10, 20, and 30 mm Hg. Mental arithmetic str

The noninvasive diagnosis of thrombophlebitis in the lower extremities: clinical value of plethysmography combined with augmentation methods and a new scoring system.

Venous impedance plethysmography and respiratory-compression Doppler augmentation responses have proved to be diagnostically valuable in suspected thrombophlebitis of the lower extremities. These noninvasive methods can provide quantitative and reproducible data on the basis of which the presence of increased deep venous resistance can be confirmed, suspected, or doubted. A new scoring system for the composite evaluation of data from 100 consecutive patients with possible thrombophlebitis, pulmonary embolism, or both, is presented. These procedures assume added importance in view of the diagno

Advancing cough research: Methodological insights into cough challenge in guinea pig models using double chamber vs whole-body plethysmography.

OBJECTIVE: This study compares two methods of citric acid-induced cough in guinea pigs in whole-body plethysmography (WBP) and double chamber plethysmography (DCP) to evaluate their efficacy. METHODS: Sixteen specific pathogen-free (SPF) and sixteen conventionally-bred (CON) animals were exposed to 0.4 M citric acid aerosol. They underwent cough provocation using both DCP and WBP methods. The number of coughs and latency to the first cough were recorded and analysed using statistical methods to determine significant differences between the two techniques. RESULTS: WBP resulted in significant

Measurement of thoraco-abdominal synchrony using respiratory inductance plethysmography: technical aspects and a proposal to overcome its limitations.

BACKGROUND: Thoraco-abdominal asynchrony (TAA) is usually assessed by respiratory inductance plethysmography. The main parameter used for its assessment is the calculation of the phase angle based on Lissajous plots. However, there are some mathematical limitations to its use. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Sequences of five breaths were selected from a) normal subjects, b) COPD patients, both at rest and during exercise, and c) patients with obstructive apnea syndrome. Automated analysis was performed calculating phase angle, loop rotation (clockwise or counterclockwise), global phase delay an

Optoelectronic plethysmography demonstrates abrogation of regional chest wall motion dysfunction in patients with pectus excavatum after Nuss repair.

PURPOSE: We previously demonstrated that patients with pectus excavatum (PE) have significantly decreased chest wall motion at the pectus defect compared with the rest of the chest vs unaffected individuals and use abdominal respiratory contributions to compensate for decreased upper chest wall motion. We hypothesize that PE repair will reverse chest wall motion dysfunction. METHODS: A prospective, institutional review board-approved study compared patients with PE before and after Nuss repair. Informed consent was obtained before motion analysis. Sixty-four patients with uncorrected PE ages
