BACKGROUND: Although Bhutan has recently advanced beyond response to preventive services for violence against women and children, there is limited data on adolescent violence to inform policy and interventions, highlighting the need for studies like the 2016 Global School-based Health Survey (GSHS).
METHODS: We have analyzed the Global School-based Student Health Survey-2016, Bhutan, to assess the burden and pattern of violence among school-going adolescents (13-17 years). Two-stage cluster sampling was done; fifty schools were selected based on probability proportional to enrollment size fro

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium vivax is the predominant cause of malaria in South Asia. P. vivax cases have fallen over the past decade, but cross-border transmission remains a major challenge to elimination. Genetic data can generate valuable insights into transmission; however, until now, only low-resolution data have been available from Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. We piloted high-resolution genotyping using a new microhaplotype (multiallelic) assay to monitor P. vivax transmission across borders.
METHODS: Genotyping was conducted using the 93-microhaplotype vivaxGEN panel on P. vivax parasites c

Dr. Amol PatelAreca nut consumption is embedded in many cultures, including that of Bhutan, several parts of India, and other South Eastern countries. Traditional fermenting of areca nut results in the production of what is called doma in Bhutan. The process enhances its carcinogenic potential and is tightly linked to oral and upper gastrointestinal cancers. As many as 45% of Bhutanese people chew doma. It is the number one cause of cancers of the oral cavity, oropharynx, hypopharynx, and larynx. We propose the slogan "Don't chew your way to cancer, say no to doma" would help in reducing oral

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by a dynamic virus, has had a profound global impact. Despite declining global COVID-19 cases and mortality rates, the emergence of new severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants remains a major concern. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the genomic sequences of SARS-CoV-2 within the Bhutanese population during the pandemic. The primary aim was to elucidate the molecular epidemiology and evolutionary patterns of SARS-CoV-2 in Bhutan, with a particular focus on genetic variations and li

Rabies is a neglected tropical disease that causes mortality and high economic burden in many developing countries. Rabies is a vaccine-preventable disease if timely post-exposure prophylaxis is available after animal exposure. The control of rabies requires limiting the transmission of the virus in the animal reservoir, effective public health measures to control outbreaks and increasing accessibility and uptake of rabies post-exposure prophylaxis. Bhutan is a small Himalayan country where rabies is endemic. In this article, we describe the death of a 3-year-old female child due to probable r

BACKGROUND: Areca nut (AN) use receives less global attention than tobacco use. Studies have linked AN consumption to a range of adverse health effects, including oral cavity and pharyngeal cancers, periodontal diseases, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, hypertension, and addiction. The masticatory use of AN is rampant in Bhutan. There is a paucity of local evidence and limited empirical studies to understand the factors associated with current AN use in Bhutan.
METHODS: This analysis uses secondary data from the Bhutan STEPS Survey 2019 that included 5575 participants aged 15-69 years, sele

The risk of increasing dengue (DEN) and chikungunya (CHIK) epidemics impacts 240 million people, health systems, and the economy in the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region. The aim of this systematic review is to monitor trends in the distribution and spread of DEN/CHIK over time and geographically for future reliable vector and disease control in the HKH region. We conducted a systematic review of the literature on the spatiotemporal distribution of DEN/CHIK in HKH published up to 23 January 2020, following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines.

BACKGROUND: Rare cancers (RCs) are challenging to manage and are "forgotten cancers" though they collectively constitute a significant proportion of all cancers (∼20%). As a first step towards streamlining care, there is an unmet need to map the epidemiology of RCs in South Asian Association for Regional Collaboration (SAARC) countries.
METHODS: The authors collected data from 30 Population-Based Cancer Registries (PBCR) of India and the published national registries of Nepal, Bhutan and Sri Lanka (SL) and compared them with the standard RARECAREnet RC list.
FINDINGS: With the standard defin

BACKGROUND: Despite global progress, South Asian countries account for a disproportionate burden of Acute hepatitis E (AHE). Understanding the burden of AHE in this region is crucial for targeted interventions.
METHODS: We used Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 data to assess the burden of AHE across eight South Asian countries from 1990 to 2021. Joinpoint regression was used to analyze temporal trends and Estimated Annual Percentage Change (EAPC) was calculated to quantify trends. The relationship between age-standardized disability-adjusted life years rate (ASDR) and socio-demographic ind

Hypertension is an emerging public health problem in Bhutan due to epidemiological and nutritional transitions in the last two decades. This study aimed to quantify risk factors of hypertension in Bhutan using nationally representative data. This was a secondary data analysis of a nationally representative World Health Organization Non-Communicable Disease STEP-wise Survey of Bhutan carried out in 2019. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify the risk factors of hypertension in the population 40-69 years age group. The Bayesian network (BN) analysed the influencing

Disulfiram can cause severe and potentially fatal hepatotoxicity, particularly in patients with preexisting liver disease. In Bhutan, where alcohol-related liver disease represents a major public health burden and pharmacological options for relapse prevention remain limited, careful patient selection, hepatic assessment, and early monitoring are essential prior to initiating disulfiram therapy.

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) landraces collected before the widespread regional adoption of Green Revolution cultivars provide a historical record of locally maintained germplasm. We characterized a panel of 202 accessions collected from Nepal and Bhutan between 1952 and 1958. Genotyping by Random Amplicon Sequencing-Direct yielded 30,228 high-quality markers; removing 38 close genetic duplicates produced a nonredundant panel of 164 accessions. We investigated genetic diversity, linkage disequilibrium, population structure, and spatial variation in effective migration, compared the panel with

BACKGROUND: Latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) remains a critical reservoir for the global tuberculosis (TB) epidemic, particularly in South Asia, where high population density and socioeconomic disparities amplify its burden. However, LTBI epidemiological trajectories and long-term forecasts have received limited attention. This study characterizes LTBI prevalence trends in South Asia from 1990 to 2021 and forecasts prevalence to 2050 to inform targeted interventions.
METHODS: We analysed age-standardised LTBI prevalence rates (ASPR per 100 000 population) from the Global Burden of Disease
