This study evaluated the accuracy and reliability of the Dinamap 8100 automated blood pressure machine against three internationally recognized criteria. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures were taken concurrently by two nurses using the automated machine and a manual sphygmomanometer. Results demonstrated agreement between automated and manual readings on one set of criteria for both systolic and diastolic pressures, and support for systolic readings only on one other criterion. Comparison of mean differences between automated and manual measures showed the automated machine consistently u

BACKGROUND: A high percentage of hypertensive patients present an arm circumference of over 32 cm; the use of a large cuff is therefore recommended. Validation studies are usually performed in the general population using a standard-size cuff. The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy of the Omron M7 device in a population with an arm circumference ranging from 32 to 42 cm.
DESIGN: A validation study was performed according to the International Protocol of the European Society of Hypertension. This protocol is divided into two phases: the first phase is performed on 15 selected partici

The conventional auscultatory methods for measuring blood pressure have been used to screen, diagnose, and manage hypertension since long. However, these have been found to be prone to errors especially the white coat phenomena which cause falsely high blood pressure readings. The Mercury sphygmomanometer and the Aneroid variety are no longer recommended by WHO for varying reasons. The Oscillometric devices are now recommended with preference for the Automated Office Blood Pressure measurement device which was found to have readings nearest to the Awake Ambulatory Blood Pressure readings. The

BACKGROUND: Nosocomial pathogens are known to exacerbate morbidity and mortality in contemporary critical healthcare. Hospital fomites, which include inanimate surfaces, have been identified as "breeding grounds" for pathogens that cause nosocomial infections. This systematic review aimed to deliver incisive insights on nosocomial pathogens in intensive care units (ICUs) and the role of fomites as potential reservoirs for their transmission.
METHOD: An extensive exploration of electronic databases, including PubMed and Scopus, from 1990 to 2023, was carried out between 25th and 29th May 2023,

BACKGROUND: The popular wrist-worn wearables recording a variety of health metrics such as blood pressure (BP) in real time could play a potential role to advance precision medicine, but these devices are often insufficiently validated for their performance to enhance confidence in its use across diverse populations. The accuracy of BP-enabled smartwatch is assessed among the multi-ethnic Malaysians, and findings is discussed in comparison with conventional automated upper-arm BP device.
METHODS: Validation procedures followed the guidelines by the Association for the Advancement of Medical I

Blood pressure (BP) is the main biomarker for monitoring patients, as its lack of control above values considered normal is a modifiable risk factor for target organ damage. The aim of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of the wearable electronic device photoplethysmography technology (PPG) Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 in determining BP in young patients compared to manual and automatic methods of BP determination. This is a quantitative and cross-sectional study, following validation protocols for wearable devices and BP measurement. It was carried out with twenty healthy young adults, in which

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is a major risk factor for a wide range of cardiovascular diseases and is typically identified by measuring blood pressure (BP) at the brachial artery. Although such a measurement may accurately determine diastolic BP, systolic BP is not reflected accurately. Current noninvasive techniques for assessing central aortic BP require additional recording of an arterial pressure wave using a high-fidelity applanation tonometer. Within one measurement cycle, the Mobil-O-Graph BP device uses brachial oscillometric BP waves for a noninvasive estimation of central BP. We therefo

OBJECTIVE: Twenty-four-hour blood pressure measurement is of importance not only in the detection of hypertension but also in the detection of blood pressure changes in hypertensive and nonhypertensives over the day to identify, for example, nondipper hypertensives. This study describes the validation of the mobil-O-Graph according to the criteria of the British Hypertension Society (BHS).
METHODS: For each patient three readings obtained by the mobil-O-Graph were compared with auscultatory sphygmomanometric readings obtained by two trained clinicians. The sphygmomanometric reference measurem

AIMS: To test whether there is any difference between blood pressure readings with patients wearing clothes under the manometer's cuff and not wearing clothes.
BACKGROUND: The few studies published on this subject have shown that blood pressure measurements give similar results whether the patients' arm is covered by clothing or not. However, it has not been clarified whether this is also true in hypertensive patients.
METHOD: Blood pressure was measured on non-sleeved arm, sleeved arm and again on non-sleeved arm in 258 hypertensive patients using a mercury-filled column sphygmomanometer. T

OBJECTIVE: Inaccurate blood pressure measurement has serious implications for both the patient and the health service. It results in inappropriate treatment and underestimation of clinical risk. Few automated devices have been shown to be accurate when compared with mercury sphygmomanometery. The DINAMAP ProCare has been developed to be accurate compared with an auscultatory standard. We used the International Protocol of the European Society of Hypertension to assess the accuracy of this device in an adult population.
METHODS: Thirty-eight participants were recruited from outpatient clinics

Since the introduction of the sphygmomanometer at the beginning to the 20th century, the significance of diastolic (DBP), Systolic (DBP) and pulse pressure (PP) as hypertensive cardiovascular risk factors has been controversial. These historical controversies are reviewed. Initially, DBP was thought to be the best measure of risk, but more recently both SBP and DBP, which ever is higher, are used in classifying hypertensive cardiovascular risk. There are problems with the present guidelines, in that SBP and DBP represent only two inflection points on the propagated pulse wave that is measured

We assessed the OSCILL-IT ambulatory blood pressure (BP) recorder (FIGI sr1, Rome, Italy) according to the performance criteria set out by the British Hypertension Society (BHS) protocol. The OSCILL-IT is a portable, noninvasive recorder that uses a process that correlates systolic, mean, and diastolic areas, identified on the oscillations, to the cuff absolute pressure. According to the recommendations of BHS, a large heterogeneous population (100 subjects: 52 men aged from 19 to 79--median 44 and 48 women from 19 to 74--median 54) was recruited in order to assess accuracy and to analyze, in

Continuous blood pressure (BP) monitoring remains a major challenge in wearable healthcare systems, as conventional cuff-based sphygmomanometers are intermittent and unsuitable for long-term use. This study presents a Smart Sock platform for cuffless BP estimation using single-site photoplethysmography (PPG). Unlike approaches based on pulse transit time or fiducial point detection, the proposed framework relies on peak-independent features extracted from PPG and its first and second derivatives, capturing blood volume and hemodynamic dynamics in the lower limb. PPG signals from 60 participant

BACKGROUND: Orthostatic hypotension (OH) is a common clinical sign, but its detection rate is low, and it is difficult to repeat because there is no standardized screening method available.
AIM: This study aimed to establish a method for detecting blood pressure and assess whether it could increase the OH detection rate in the elderly.
METHODS: From May to October, 2022, 178 patients with symptomatic OH and 286 subjects with asymptomatic OH were selected. BP from the bilateral brachial artery was measured using two electronic sphygmomanometers on both arms at the same time, in the order of s

BACKGROUND: In Morocco, there are no studies that focused on the hypertension and its associated risk factors through patients with type 2 diabetes. Different findings show that the frequency of type 2 diabetes has risen rapidly in Morocco. The main objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of hypertension and its associated risk factors among a group of patients with type 2 diabetes and to examine the level of control of hypertension among type 2 diabetic patients with hypertension.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out on 525 type 2 diabetics in three Moroccan regions.
