Berlin Grading System Can Stratify the Onset and Predict Perioperative Complications in Adult Moyamoya Disease.

BACKGROUND: The grading system for moyamoya disease is not established. OBJECTIVE: To assess the usefulness of a recently proposed grading system for stratifying the clinical severity and predicting postoperative morbidity in adult moyamoya disease. METHODS: We investigated 176 hemispheres from 89 adult patients who were diagnosed with moyamoya disease in Japan. Their data were analyzed using the Berlin grading system with minor modifications. After summarizing the numerical values for digital subtraction angiography (1-3 points), magnetic resonance imaging (0-1 points), and single-photon em

Berlin Heart EXCOR pediatric ventricular assist device for bridge to heart transplantation in US children.

BACKGROUND: Recent data suggest that the Berlin Heart EXCOR Pediatric ventricular assist device is superior to extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for bridge to heart transplantation. Published data are limited to 1 in 4 children who received the device as part of the US clinical trial. We analyzed outcomes for all US children who received the EXCOR to characterize device outcomes in an unselected cohort and to identify risk factors for mortality to facilitate patient selection. METHODS AND RESULTS: This multicenter, prospective cohort study involved all children implanted with the Berlin Hea

Seeking a compromise between pharmaceutical pollution and phosphorus load: Management strategies for Lake Tegel, Berlin.

Lake Tegel (Berlin, Germany) is controlled by two main inflows: inflow #1 (River Havel) is heavily phosphorus-laden, whereas inflow #2 is an artificial confluence that includes discharge from a municipal wastewater treatment plant distinguished by high levels of phosphorus and pharmaceuticals. To reduce the phosphorus load on the lake, a phosphorus elimination plant (PEP) is situated at inflow #2. Moreover, the two inflows are short-circuited by a pipeline that transfers part of the inflow #1 water to the PEP and finally releases it into inflow #2. The pipeline and the PEP have contributed to

Management of single-ventricle patients with Berlin Heart EXCOR Ventricular Assist Device: single-center experience.

There are minimal data regarding chronic management of single-ventricle ventricular assist device (VAD) patients. This study aims to describe our center's multidisciplinary team management of single-ventricle patients supported long term with the Berlin Heart EXCOR Pediatric VAD. Patient #1 was a 4-year-old with double-outlet right ventricle with aortic atresia, L-looped ventricles, and heart block who developed heart failure 1 year after Fontan. She initially required extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support and was transitioned to Berlin Heart systemic VAD. She was supported for 363 days

The non-invasive Berlin Brain-Computer Interface: fast acquisition of effective performance in untrained subjects.

Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) systems establish a direct communication channel from the brain to an output device. These systems use brain signals recorded from the scalp, the surface of the cortex, or from inside the brain to enable users to control a variety of applications. BCI systems that bypass conventional motor output pathways of nerves and muscles can provide novel control options for paralyzed patients. One classical approach to establish EEG-based control is to set up a system that is controlled by a specific EEG feature which is known to be susceptible to conditioning and to let t

Behavior change and infection induced immunity led to the decline of the 2022 Mpox outbreak in Berlin.

BACKGROUND: Mpox denotes a viral zoonosis caused by the Orthopoxvirus monkeypox (MPXV), which is endemic in West and Central Africa. In spring 2022, notable outbreaks of MPXV clade IIb were recorded in several high-income countries, predominantly affecting men who have sex with men (MSM). At the peak of the outbreak, over 200 new mpox cases per week were reported in Berlin, which constitutes one of the largest MSM population in Europe. Within the same year, the outbreak significantly declined, and it is unclear which factors contributed to this rapid decrease. METHODS: To investigate the conc

Risk Factors for Foodborne Zoonoses Among Populations With and Without a Migration Background in Berlin, Germany.

Knowledge gaps exist regarding foodborne zoonotic diseases in migrant populations. We assessed the seroprevalence of Campylobacter, Salmonella, Yersinia, Brucella, hepatitis E virus (HEV), and Trichinella, and identified potential exposure risks in populations with and without migration backgrounds. In a cross-sectional study (2014-2016), adults with Turkish, Russian, Vietnamese, or German backgrounds residing in Berlin, Germany, were recruited via convenience sampling. Sera were screened for anti-IgG antibodies, and risk factors were assessed via a structured questionnaire. Logistic regressio

The Treatment of Burkitt Lymphoma With the Berlin-Frankfurt-Münster Protocol With Rituximab and Consolidative Autologous Transplantation.

INTRODUCTION: Intensive treatment approaches are required for adult patients with Burkitt lymphoma (BL), although an univocal standard of care still does not exist. The use of frontline autologous stem cells transplantation (ASCT) is debated. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 2004 and 2020, 50 patients with BL were treated with the Berlin-Frankfurt-Münster (BFM). Treatment plan consisted of 3 blocks, A (ifosfamide, vincristine, methotrexate, etoposide, and cytarabine), B (vincristine, cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, and doxorubicin), and C (vindesine, methotrexate, etoposide, and cytarabine), eac

Barriers to abortion provision: A qualitative study among medical students and gynecologists in Berlin, Germany.

OBJECTIVES: While abortion is a common medical procedure in Germany, the number of abortion-providing facilities declined by 46% between 2003 and 2022. As existing data do not paint a complete picture of the factors influencing this decline, an understanding into the perspectives of health care professionals (HCPs) is necessary. We set out to examine attitudes of HCPs in Berlin, Germany toward different aspects of abortion to identify barriers that might prevent them from providing abortions. STUDY DESIGN: We used a qualitative research design consisting of in-depth semistructured one-on-one

Psychometrics of the Iowa and Berlin Gambling Tasks: Unresolved Issues With Reliability and Validity for Risk Taking.

The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) is one of the most prominent paradigms employed for the assessment of risk taking in the laboratory, and it was shown to distinguish between various patient groups and controls. The present study was conducted to test the psychometric characteristics of the original IGT and of a new gambling task variant for assessing individual differences. Two studies were conducted with adults of the general population (n = 220) and with adolescents (n = 389). Participants were also tested on multiple measures of working memory capacity, fluid intelligence, personality traits as

Pregnancies in Women Aged 45 Years and Older - a 10-Year Retrospective Analysis in Berlin.

Introduction Improved fertility treatment options and a change in the socio-cultural concept of family planning, especially in industrialized regions, has led to an increasing number of births by women of advanced maternal age, which is associated with a higher rate of complications. The aim of this study was to analyze pregnancy outcomes in women aged ≥ 45 years in an inner-city German hospital and to compare these results to those of a younger cohort. Materials and Methods Over a 10-year period from January 2004 to May 2015, the pregnancy outcomes of all 186 women aged ≥ 45 years who deliver

Validation of the Malay version of Berlin questionaire to identify Malaysian patients for obstructive sleep apnea.

OBJECTIVE: To validate the Malay version of Berlin Questionnaire (BQ) as a tool to screen for patients at risk of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in primary care. BACKGROUND: Most patients with OSA are unrecognised and untreated. Thus, the BQ has been used as a tool to screen for patients at risk for OSA. However, this tool has not been validated in Malay version. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A parallel back-to-back translation method was applied to produce the Malay version (Berlin-M). The Malay version was administered to 150 patients in a tertiary respiratory medical centre.  Concurrent validity
