INTRODUCTION: Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) stenosis is a complex anatomical scenario for transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Favorable short-term clinical outcomes have been reported with TAVI in this setting, but long-term data are scarce.
METHODS: We retrospectively included, in a single-center registry, patients with BAV stenosis who underwent TAVI before 2020. We compared patients treated with self-expanding valves (SEV) versus balloon-expandable valves (BEV). The primary endpoint was a composite of all-cause mortality, stroke and need for aortic valve (AV) reintervention at 3

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery disease and aortic stenosis often coexist. Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has emerged as a valid therapeutic option for younger, lower-risk patients who may eventually require coronary artery disease treatment. Thus, post-TAVI coronary access (CA) and percutaneous coronary intervention are expected to increase. The purpose of this study was to retrospectively evaluate patients who were enrolled in the SOURCE 3 (SAPIEN 3 Aortic Bioprosthesis European Outcome) European registry for treatment with the balloon-expandable SAPIEN 3 transcatheter heart valv

BACKGROUND: The durability of transcatheter aortic bioprosthetic valves is a crucial issue, but data are scarce, especially beyond 5 years of follow-up. We aimed to assess long-term (7 years) structural valve deterioration (SVD) and bioprosthetic valve failure of transcatheter aortic bioprosthetic valves.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Consecutive patients with at least 5-year follow-up available undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation from April 2002 to December 2011 in 5 French centers were included. Incidence of SVD and bioprosthetic valve failure were defined according to newly standardi

OBJECTIVES: A large comprehensive analysis of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) was performed for failed stentless bioprostheses.
BACKGROUND: Valve-in-valve (ViV) transcatheter aortic replacement (TAVR) is an alternative to redo surgery for patients with a failing aortic bioprosthesis.
METHODS: Unadjusted outcome data were collected from the VIVID (Valve-in-Valve International Data) registry between 2007 and 2016 from a total of 1,598 aortic ViV procedures (291 stentless, 1,307 stented bioprostheses).
RESULTS: Bioprosthetic failure was secondary to aortic regurgitation in 56% of

OBJECTIVES: To explore the rate, the determinants of success, and the hemodynamic impact of balloon postdilatation (BPD) of self-expanding transcatheter heart valves (SE-THVs) BACKGROUND: BPD is commonly used to optimize valve expansion and reduce paravalvular leakage (PVL) after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) without clearly knowing its hemodynamic benefits.
METHODS: Patients (n = 307) who received a SE-THV were stratified according to whether a BPD was performed or not. Patients who received BPD were stratified according to the severity of PVL remaining after BPD into two gr

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) with self-expandable Medtronic CoreValve (MCV; Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN) or balloon-expandable Edwards SAPIEN XT valve (ESV; Edwards Lifesciences, Irvine, CA) has been widely used for treatment of high-risk patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS). There is limited data comparing the long-term hemodynamic performance of these two valves. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the short and long-term hemodynamic performance of TAVI with either MCV or ESV. A total of 78 patients who underwent TAVI in our center between June 01, 2012 and January 0

AIMS: N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) has been found to correlate with the severity of aortic valve stenosis and to provide prognostic information in aortic stenosis patients undergoing surgical aortic valve replacement. There is a paucity of data describing the association between clinical outcomes after TAVI and NT-proBNP levels. We investigated the evolution and prognostic value of NT-proBNP levels after TAVI.
METHOD AND RESULTS: We prospectively collected data on the baseline characteristics, NT-proBNP levels (baseline, post-treatment and discharge) and adverse clinic

This case illustrates the awareness that must be taken of the high morphological risk due to the calcifications of both, the aortic and mitral annulus in elderly patients when performing transapical aortic valve implantation. In an 86-year-old, multimorbid woman (logistic EuroSCORE = 27%) with symptomatic aortic stenosis (annular diameter = 23.4 mm) and severe mitral annular calcification, the implantation of a 26-mm Edwards SAPIEN (Edwards Lifesciences, Irvine, California, United States) valve in aortic position was primary successful, with no paravalvular leakage, valve instability, or coron

Pediatric cardiac interventions via percutaneous common carotid artery (CCA) access have been shown to be safe and effective. However, the impact of placement of a sheath in the carotid artery for interventions on cerebral perfusion is unknown. In this study we used cerebral near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to analyze the effects of percutaneous CCA access for cardiac interventions on cerebral perfusion. This study is a retrospective chart review carried out at a tertiary care center on all pediatric patients who underwent percutaneous cardiac catheterization via carotid artery access from Ja

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are major causes of premature mortality and disability, especially in settings where timely cardiac surgery or percutaneous interventions are limited. Globally, the prevalence of CVDs is rising, with significant regional differences. Africa bears a high burden of congenital heart disease (CHD) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD) but has limited access to surgical and interventional resources. This study describes the spectrum and management of cardiac diseases at the Cardiac Center of Ethiopia (CCE), highlighting treatment gaps. METHODS: A hospital-base

Percutaneous device occlusion of secundum atrial septal defects (ASDs) is becoming an accepted alternative to surgical closure. This method allows us to evaluate patients with complex conditions for treatment. From a total of 70 patients with ASD evaluated for percutaneous closure, we selected for analysis 28 who had complex conditions. The mean age was 36+/-23 yr (range, 4-72). Six had heart failure, and of these six, three had atrial fibrillation. At cardiac catheterization, the pulmonary pressure was 47+/-24 mm Hg, and the QP/QS was 1.7+/-0.4; two patients had bidirectional shunt and system

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) in bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) anatomy remains challenging due to anatomical complexity and limited trial data. New-generation balloon-expandable valves, such as Myval, require further evaluation in this subgroup.
AIMS: To report 1-year VARC-3 outcomes following TAVI procedure with the Myval transcatheter heart valve (THV) in BAV anatomy.
METHODS: From December 2019 to July 2023, 52 consecutive BAV patients at moderate-to-high surgical risk or deemed unsuitable for surgery underwent TAVI with the Myval THV. Outcomes, assessed per VAR

BACKGROUND: Self-expandable valves are emerging complements to balloon-expandable valves for transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement in dysfunctional right ventricular outflow tracts, though their safety and efficacy remain underexplored. We aim to compare patient characteristics and outcomes of self-expandable valves and balloon-expandable valves in transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement.
METHODS: Baseline and early follow-up data were prospectively analyzed for 145 patients who underwent transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement with Edwards SAPIEN 3 (ES3) balloon-expandable valves or

BACKGROUND: The management of Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) patients with a small aortic annulus (SAA) postures a substantial challenge, increasing the risk of patient- prosthesis mismatch (PPM) and overall mortality.
AIMS: This study aimed to compare the hemodynamic and clinical outcomes of transcatheter balloon-expandable valve (BEV) versus transcatheter self-expandable valve (SEV) in SAA.
METHODS: We conducted propensity score matching (PSM) of severe AS patients with SAA who underwent trans-femoral TAVR and enrolled to the Israeli TAVR registry between the years 2008 and

Background The incidence of conduction abnormalities requiring permanent pacemaker implantation (PPI) after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) with early and later generation prostheses remains debated. Methods and Results Based on the administrative hospital-discharge database, we collected information for all patients treated with TAVR between 2010 and 2019 in France. We compared the incidence of PPI after TAVR according to the type and generation of valve implanted. A total of 49 201 patients with aortic stenosis treated with TAVR using the balloon-expandable (BE) Edwards SAPIEN
