Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has become a pandemic worldwide. On a daily basis the number of deaths associated with COVID-19 is rapidly increasing. The main transmission route of SARS-CoV-2 is through the air (airborne transmission). This review details the airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the aerodynamics, and different modes of transmission (e.g. droplets, droplet nuclei, and aerosol particles). SARS-CoV-2 can be transmitted by an infected person during activities such as expiration, coughing, sneezing, and tal

Repeated outbreaks of Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) infections have been observed in recent decades and dominated by various enteroviral serotypes. In particular, enterovirus 71 (EV-A71), coxsackievirus A16 (CV-A16) and coxsackievirus A6 (CV-A6) dominated the prevalence of HFMD infections alternatively in recent years with various outbreak sizes in Baoji, a city of Shaanxi Province in Northwest China. Estimating the reproduction number for various enteroviruses serotypes in northwest China (north temperate zone) and identification of cyclicity of HFMD infections are therefore an issue of

Since 1991, Cameroon, a cholera endemic African country, has been experiencing large cholera outbreaks and cholera related deaths. In this paper, we use a "fitted" demographic equation (disease-free equation) to capture the total population of Cameroon, and then use a fitted low-high risk structured cholera differential equation model to study reported cholera cases in Cameroon from 1987 to 2004. For simplicity, our model has no spatial structure. The basic reproduction number of our fitted cholera model, R0, is bigger than 1 and our model predicted cholera endemicity in Cameroon. In addition,

Echinococcosis has been recognized as one of the most important helminth zoonosis in China. Available models always consider dogs as the mainly definitive hosts. However, such models ignore the distinctions between domestic dogs and stray dogs. In this study, we propose a 10-dimensional dynamic model distinguishing stray dogs from domestic dogs to explore the special role of stray dogs and potential effects of disposing stray dogs on the transmission of Echinococcosis. The basic reproduction number R0, which measures the impact of both domestic dogs and stray dogs on the transmission, is deter

Antiviral treatment is one of the key pharmacological interventions against many infectious diseases. This is particularly important in the absence of preventive measures such as vaccination. However, the evolution of drug-resistance in treated patients and its subsequent spread to the population pose significant impediments to the containment of disease epidemics using treatment. Previous models of population dynamics of influenza infection have shown that in the presence of drug-resistance, the epidemic final size (i.e., the total number of infections throughout the epidemic) is affected by

In this work, we propose novel epidemic models (named, susceptible-infected-recovered-susceptible-bacteria) for cholera dynamics by incorporating a general formulation of bacteria growth and spatial variation. In the first part, a generalized ordinary differential equation (ODE) model is presented and it is found that bacterial growth contributes to the increase in the basic reproduction number, [Formula: see text]. With the derived basic reproduction number, we analyse the local and global dynamics of the model. Particularly, we give a rigorous proof on the endemic global stability by employi

A wide range of infectious diseases are both vertically and horizontally transmitted. Such diseases are spatially transmitted via multiple species in heterogeneous environments, typically described by complex meta-population models. The reproduction number, R0, is a critical metric predicting whether the disease can invade the meta-population system. This paper presents the reproduction number for a generic disease vertically and horizontally transmitted among multiple species in heterogeneous networks, where nodes are locations, and links reflect outgoing or incoming movement flows. The metap

There is considerable interest in the management of insecticide resistance in mosquitoes. One possible approach to slowing down the evolution of resistance is to use late-life-acting (LLA) insecticides that selectively kill only the old mosquitoes that transmit malaria, thereby reducing selection pressure favoring resistance. In this paper we consider an age-structured compartmental model for malaria with two mosquito strains that differ in resistance to insecticide, using an SEI approach to model malaria in the mosquitoes and thereby incorporating the parasite developmental times for the two

The parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, which causes Chagas' disease, is typically transmitted through a cycle in which vectors become infected through bloodmeals on infected hosts and then infect other hosts through defecation at the sites of subsequent feedings. The vectors native to the southeastern United States, however, are inefficient at transmitting T. cruzi in this way, which suggests that alternative transmission modes may be responsible for maintaining the established sylvatic infection cycle. Vertical and oral transmission of sylvatic hosts, as well as differential behavior of infected vec

Most models for infectious disease spread simplify contact heterogeneity by assuming constant rates within a week. However, empirical studies show clear variation, such as reduced workplace contacts on weekends. In this work, we investigate the effects of daily variation in workplace contacts on the spread of respiratory infections using the individual-based framework GEMS (German Epidemic Micro-Simulation System) with a synthetic population of 5 million individuals. We compare the scenario with uniform daily contacts to the scenario with more contacts on workdays and fewer on weekends, keepin

Bacterial meningitis is a severe infection affecting the protective membranes of the brain and spinal cord, with rapidly worsening symptoms that can lead to life-threatening complications. This study presents an autonomous deterministic epidemic model, SIaIsMRS, to explore the dynamics of bacterial meningitis in a community implementing control strategies like media coverage, early diagnosis, isolation, and treatment. We adjust the transmission probability based on media coverage and calculate the effective reproduction number, Ref, which includes contributions from asymptomatic Refa and sympt

In this paper, we consider a novel mpox virus transmission model with human interactions, hospitalization rates, vaccination coverage (single-dose and two-dose), and vaccine efficacy, where the susceptible individuals are divided into low-risk and high-risk groups, and infected individuals are divided into asymptomatic and symptomatic groups. First, the existence, uniqueness, and continuous dependence on initial conditions, as well as the positivity and boundedness of solutions, are investigated. Then, the existence and local stability of all equilibria, the basic reproduction number, and forw

This study develops and analyzes a deterministic compartmental model to understand the transmission dynamics of Neisseria meningitidis under endemic conditions. Compartment profile plots illustrate the progression of the disease to an endemic level over time. Explicit expressions for the endemic equilibrium points and the basic reproductive number are derived. The basic reproductive number is decomposed into three interpretable components: contributions from (i) carriers, (ii) carriers progressing to symptomatic cases, and (iii) direct symptomatic cases (i.e., infectives bypassing carriership)

In this paper, we introduce a novel multi-scale network model of two epidemics: HIV infection and opioid addiction. The HIV infection dynamics is modeled on a complex network. We determine the basic reproduction number of HIV infection, $ \mathcal{R}_{v} $, and the basic reproduction number of opioid addiction, $ \mathcal{R}_{u} $. We show that the model has a unique disease-free equilibrium which is locally asymptotically stable when both $ \mathcal{R}_{u} $ and $ \mathcal{R}_{v} $ are less than one. If $ \mathcal{R}_{u} > 1 $ or $ \mathcal{R}_{v} > 1 $, then the disease-free equilibrium is u

The tenth Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) that occurred from 2018 to 2020 was exacerbated by long-lasting conflicts and war in the region. We propose a deterministic model to investigate the impact of such disruptive events on the transmission dynamics of the Ebola virus disease. It is an extension of the classical susceptible-infectious-recovered model, enriched by an additional class of contaminated environment to account for indirect transmission as well as two classes of hospitalized individuals and patients who escape from the healthcare facility due to violence a

The basic reproduction number ([Formula: see text]) can be considerably higher in an SIR model with heterogeneous mixing compared to that from a corresponding model with homogeneous mixing. For example, in the case of measles, mumps and rubella in San Diego, CA, Glasser et al. (Lancet Infect Dis 16(5):599-605, 2016. https://doi.org/10.1016/S1473-3099(16)00004-9 ), reported an increase of 70% in [Formula: see text] when heterogeneity was accounted for. Meta-population models with simple heterogeneous mixing functions, e.g., proportionate mixing, have been employed to identify optimal vaccinatio

A mathematical model for cholera is formulated that incorporates hyperinfectivity and temporary immunity using distributed delays. The basic reproduction number R(0) is defined and proved to give a sharp threshold that determines whether or not the disease dies out. The case of constant temporary immunity is further considered with two different infectivity kernels. Numerical simulations are carried out to show that when R(0) > 1, the unique endemic equilibrium can lose its stability and oscillations occur. Using cholera data from the literature, the quantitative effects of hyperinfectivity an

We consider the dynamics of a mosquito-transmitted pathogen in a multi-patch Ross-Macdonald malaria model with mobile human hosts, mobile vectors, and a heterogeneous environment. We show the existence of a globally stable steady state, and a threshold that determines whether a pathogen is either absent from all patches, or endemic and present at some level in all patches. Each patch is characterized by a local basic reproduction number, whose value predicts whether the disease is cleared or not when the patch is isolated: patches are known as "demographic sinks" if they have a local basic rep
