Arthroscopic-assisted bone grafting and percutaneous K-wires fixation for the treatment of scaphoid nonunion in the skeletally immature patient: Three cases report.

RATIONALE: The treatment methods of pediatric scaphoid nonunion are still controversial. To our knowledge, arthroscopic-assisted treatments for pediatric scaphoid nonunion has not been reported in the English-language literature. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to report the use of arthroscopic-assisted bone grafting for scaphoid nonunion fracture in 3 patients and present a literature review. PATIENTS CONCERNS: Two 15-year-old patients developed carpal joint injuries over a year, prior to their hospital presentation, since they had not received adequate treatment. The third patient,

Kirschner wire placement in scaphoid bones using fluoroscopic navigation: a cadaver study comparing conventional techniques with navigation.

BACKGROUND: During scaphoid fixation, a pin guide is first inserted along the axis of the scaphoid, and then a cannulated screw is inserted around the pin guide. At least, the pinguide is removed. To verify the position of the pin guide, fluoroscopy is typically used, with the disadvantage of irradiation. Thus, it is impossible to visualize the pin guide in more than one view simultaneously. The goal of this study was to compare two pin guide placement techniques in scaphoid fixation: conventional (CF) vs. fluoroscopic navigation (FN). METHODS: Eleven upper limbs of cadavers were divided into

Comparison of packing-free treatment with and without Kirschner wire splinting for nasal bone fracture: a retrospective analysis in Korea.

BACKGROUND: Nasal bone fractures are among the most common facial injuries. This study aimed to compare the clinical outcomes of a no-packing approach with and without Kirschner wire (K-wire) splinting in the treatment of less severe nasal bone fractures. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study comparing cases of simple fractures classified as type II-III according to Higuera's classification that were treated surgically with closed reduction. Patients were divided into two groups: the control group (no packing, no K-wire splint) and the experimental group (no packing with K-wire splint).

Enhanced bone cement distribution in percutaneous vertebroplasty using a curved guide wire: a propensity score matching analysis.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCF) severely affect the quality of life in the aged population. Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) alleviates pain and stabilizes vertebrae, but suboptimal bone cement distribution can cause complications. Hence, this study aimed to clarify whether a new technique for PVP, using a curved guide wire, enhances the distribution of bone cement and improves clinical outcomes in patients with OVCF. METHODS: Patients with single-segment OVCF underwent PVP or curved guide wire percutaneous vertebroplasty (C-PVP). Propensity score matching (PS

Biomechanical analysis of plate versus K-wire fixation for metacarpal shaft fractures with wedge-shaped bone defects.

BACKGROUND: Metacarpal shaft fracture is a common type of hand fracture. Numerous studies have explored fixing transverse fractures in the midshaft of the metacarpal bone. However, this section of the metacarpal bone is often susceptible to high-energy injury, resulting in comminuted fracture or bone loss. In such cases, wedge-shaped bone defects can develop in the metacarpal shaft, increasing the difficulty of performing fracture fixation. Notably, the research on this type of fracture fixation is limited. This study compared the abilities of four fixation methods to fix metacarpal shaft frac

[Treatment of fresh subcutaneous flexor tendon rupture of the distal joint of long fingers with temporary bone wire arthrodesis].

Drop-finger at the distal joint or mallet-finger from injury occurs because of the extensor apparatus is so much weaker than the flexor tendon that it breaks under strain. We report on 100 cases treated by internal splinting with longitudinal applied Kirschner wire in the distal and middle phalanx of the finger. It affords an absolute immobilisation of the distal interphalangeal joint in slight hyperextension with relaxation of the extensor apparatus. The wire was removed after six weeks. The results evaluated in 76 patients by follow-up four to 84 months were classified as excellent in 86.8%

Interspinous wiring without bone grafting for nonunion or delayed union following anterior spinal fusion of the cervical spine.

Nine patients who had unsuccessful anterior interbody fusion or subtotal spondylectomy and fusion for cervical spondylosis were treated by interspinous wiring without bone grafting. Bone union was confirmed during a mean postoperative period of 2 years and 2 months in seven patients by the disappearance of clear zones observed preoperatively in the disc space, and by continuity of the trabeculae in radiograms. One of the two patients in whom the procedure failed to unite the site of nonunion had received technically inadequate wiring with slight mobility at the wiring site; in the other patien

Refracture of pediatric both-bone diaphyseal forearm fracture following intramedullary fixation with Kirschner wires is likely to occur in the presence of immature radiographic healing.

PURPOSE: Refracture of pediatric both-bone diaphyseal forearm fractures (PBDFFs) may occur, even if the fractures are treated with intramedullary nailing. The purpose of this study was to investigate the risk of refracture of PBDFFs treated with intramedullary Kirschner wires (K-wires), which are commonly used in our clinic. METHODS: The present multicenter retrospective study included 60 consecutive patients with 60 PBDFFs who were treated with intramedullary K-wires at 5 hospitals between 2007 and 2016. The age of the patients at the time of the primary fracture ranged from 2 to 15 years. T

Effects of K-wire diameter and insertion angle on femoral bone medial closing-wedge osteotomies: a finite element study.

Medial closing-wedge surgery for distal femoral osteotomy is employed to correct genu valgum by correcting coronal plane malalignment. This procedure involves pre-surgery planning, creating a wedge incision, performing the osteotomy, and stabilizing with plates and screws. However, hinge fractures during wedge closure present significant challenges, often necessitating revisions. Contemporary solutions have explored the use of k-wires, and this study investigates their biomechanical implications. The interplay between k-wire insertion angle and diameter, often overlooked in existing literature

Resection of a solitary bone metastasis using preoperative computed tomography (CT)-guided hook wire localization: a case report.

Secondary bone metastasis are a common evolution of many types of cancer. In some instance, it is needed to remove those metastases to improve the prognosis of the patient. Bone metastasis that are invisible and non-palpable during the intervention are difficult to remove while being sure to respect safe resection margins. We present the case of a woman suffering from breast cancer. Despite the treatment of the primitive lesion, she presented a solitary bone metastasis on her iliac crest. The lesion was removed surgically but could not be seen or touched during the procedure due to its locatio
