OBJECTIVE: Menière's disease (MD) is characterized by episodes of vertigo, tinnitus, and sensorineural hearing loss. In the setting of bilateral deafness due to MD alone or contralateral pathology, cochlear implantation (CI) improves hearing. Active MD is characterized by fluctuating auditory symptoms and vertigo; whereas remittance of vertiginous symptoms and severe, permanent sensorineural hearing loss characterizes the inactive disease state. This study evaluates outcomes for MD patients compared with the general CI population and assesses if disease activity affects implant outcomes.

Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) is a neuroimmunologic demyelinating disorder that may present with central or peripheral sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). This case describes a 43-year-old female with MOGAD and profound right-sided SNHL who did not improve with neuroimmunologic therapy. Additional immunologic and radiographic workup was unrevealing. The patient underwent right cochlear implantation (CI) without complication and with significant improvement in her speech recognition. Despite the possibility of central SNHL, select patients with MOGAD may

BACKGROUND: The role of T cells in health and disease has already been studied extensively in many organs, yet their activity in the cochlea and involvement in hearing loss remains less explored. This review aims to summarize current existing literature on the presence and activity of T cells in the cochlea and the link between T-cell activity and the development of hearing loss.
METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was performed on PubMed and Web of Science on the 4th of December 2024 using the following search term: ("T-cell" OR "T cells" OR "T-lymphocyte*") AND ("cochlea*" OR "sp

Mutations in the gene for Norrie disease protein (Ndp) cause syndromic deafness and blindness. We show here that cochlear function in an Ndp knockout mouse deteriorated with age: At P3-P4, hair cells (HCs) showed progressive loss of Pou4f3 and Gfi1, key transcription factors for HC maturation, and Myo7a, a specialized myosin required for normal function of HC stereocilia. Loss of expression of these genes correlated to increasing HC loss and profound hearing loss by 2 mo. We show that overexpression of the Ndp gene in neonatal supporting cells or, remarkably, up-regulation of canonical Wnt sig

BACKGROUND: Surgical management of Ménière's disease (MD) is recommended in case of medical and intratympanic treatment failures. Translabyrinthine vestibular nerve section has been considered the gold standard for denervation procedures in order to control vertigo attacks, although at the cost of sacrificing residual hearing. To the best of our knowledge, no work has been published with regard to a group of patients submitted to translabyrinthine vestibular neurectomy and simultaneous cochlear implant for MD. The aim of the present study was to assess the effectiveness of translabyrinthine ve

OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: It has been our clinical observation that active middle ear disease (MED) temporally corresponds to a transient decrease in cochlear implant (CI) function, specifically at the apical electrodes. This is non-intuitive as CI function is thought to be independent of middle ear aeration and inflammation. The purpose of this case study is to demonstrate how active MED negatively affects both subjective hearing complaints and objective impedance measures in a CI patient.
RESULTS: Subjective hearing decreased and impedances levels increased significantly when the patient was

The purpose of this research was to evaluate the relation between self-reported cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cochlear function in older adults. The Epidemiology of Hearing Loss Study (EHLS) is an ongoing population-based study of hearing loss and its risk factors in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. As part of the EHLS questionnaire, participants were asked about their cardiovascular medical history. CVD history was determined from questions regarding history of angina, myocardial infarction (MI), and stroke. Questions about the use of antihypertensive medication and blood pressure measurements deter

During transtympanic electrocochleography, action potential (AP) tuning curves were derived as a measure of cochlear frequency selectivity. In 18 out of 21 patients with symptoms of Menière's disease, a poor frequency selectivity was observed. In 12 subjects the effects on frequency selectivity of oral glycerol were measured, and in 5 patients AP tuning curves indicated an improvement in sharpness of tuning by a factor of 1.5-2.5. These changes started approximately 30 min after oral glycerol administration. In 2 subjects there was a deterioration in AP tuning. In 5 patients no significant cha

BACKGROUND: Menière's disease (MD) is an inner ear disorder due to raised endolymphatic pressure (hydrops), characterized by cochlear symptoms associated with episodic vertigo. In delayed hydrops, vertigo attacks begin long after the onset of a hearing loss. Few were published on MD in which the onset of vertigo precedes cochlear symptoms by several months. Vestibular migraine (VM) is also a cause of episodic vertigo and an association between migraine and MD was proposed. Purpose of our retrospective work was to assess clinical features associated with MD in which vertigo precedes by months c

Background: Menière's disease (MD) is a disorder characterized by auditory and vestibular dysfunction that significantly deteriorates patients' quality of life (QoL). In addition to the management of vestibular symptoms, some patients with bilateral hearing loss meet criteria for cochlear implantation (CI). Objectives: (1) To assess hearing results and QoL outcomes following CI in patients with MD. (2) To compare these results to a matched control group of patients who had undergone CI. (3) To analyse differences in MD patients who have undergone simultaneous or sequential labyrinthectomy or p

Objective: Due to the natural aging and the loosened CI-implantation criteria more formerly operated Meniere's patients will be supplied with a cochlear implant. However, it raises the question whether an implantation in a previously treated ear is promising. Material and Methods: Based on 2 cases in which we have carried out a CI-implantation, one of them 10 years after transmastoidal labyrinthectomy, and based on the current literature we draw attention to problems and prospects of success. Discussion: Histological studies show only a small ossification of the cochlea after labyrinthectomy.

BACKGROUND: MYH9-related disease (MYH9-RD) is a rare syndromic disorder deriving from mutations in MYH9, the gene for the heavy chain of non-muscle myosin IIA. Patients present with congenital thrombocytopenia and giant platelets and have a variable risk of developing sensorineural deafness, kidney damage, presenile cataract, and liver abnormalities. Almost all MYH9-RD patients develop the hearing defect, which, in many individuals, progresses to severe to profound deafness with high impact on quality of life. These patients are potential candidates for cochlear implantation (CI), however, no
