True four-dimensional analysis of thoracic aortic displacement and distension using model-based segmentation of computed tomography angiography.

Previous analyses of aortic displacement and distension using computed tomography angiography (CTA) were performed on double-oblique multi-planar reformations and did not consider through-plane motion. The aim of this study was to overcome this limitation by using a novel computational approach for the assessment of thoracic aortic displacement and distension in their true four-dimensional extent. Vessel segmentation with landmark tracking was executed on CTA of 24 patients without evidence of aortic disease. Distension magnitudes and maximum displacement vectors (MDV) including their directio

MRI-based computational fluid dynamics for diagnosis and treatment prediction: clinical validation study in patients with coarctation of aorta.

PURPOSE: To reduce the need for diagnostic catheterization and optimize treatment in a variety of congenital heart diseases, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is proposed. However, data about the accuracy of CFD in a clinical context are still sparse. To fill this gap, this study compares MRI-based CFD to catheterization in the coarctation of aorta (CoA) setting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirteen patients with CoA were investigated by routine MRI prior to catheterization. 3D whole-heart MRI was used to reconstruct geometries and 4D flow-sensitive phase-co

Stereotactic biopsy and drainage of a brainstem abscess caused by Listeria monocytogenes.

Listerial rhombencephalitis and brain abscesses are rare, but potentially life-threatening conditions. Early initiation of antibiotic therapy is crucial, but establishing the diagnosis of listerial brainstem abscess can be difficult. Stereotactic biopsy and drainage of space-occupying abscesses of the brainstem should be considered especially in cases of rapid clinical deterioration. We successfully performed stereotactic biopsy and drainage of a listerial brainstem abscess in a 42-year-old male patient who deteriorated despite antibiotic treatment, demonstrating that this approach is suitable

Computer simulated "Virtual TAVR" to guide TAVR in the presence of a previous Starr-Edwards mitral prosthesis.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the utility of the HeartNavigator III software (Philips Healthcare, Netherlands) to create a patient specific three-dimensional model using ECG-gated CT images to plan Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) in a patient with previous Starr-Edwards mitral prosthesis. METHODS: A patient with a previous Starr-Edwards mitral prosthesis considered too high risk for conventional surgery required TAVR. It was uncertain whether this would be possible whilst avoiding the complication of the aortic prosthesis interacting with the high-profile Starr-Edwards cage and ball

Differential cardiac remodelling: patterns of cardiomyocyte morphometry in multiple patient conditions.

AIMS: Cardiac remodelling drives heart failure (HF), yet microstructural drivers in human tissue remain poorly defined due to the limited resolution of clinical imaging. This study sought to quantitatively assess cardiomyocyte morphometry and its relationship with clinical phenotypes. METHODS AND RESULTS: We developed MyoSAM, a deep learning framework for quantitative morphometric characterization of H&E-stained whole-slide images (N = 334 patients). Cardiomyocyte size was quantified using the myocyte maximum inscribed circle (MMIC) radius, along with measures of nuclear size and perinuclear-

Machine learning models for carotid artery plaque detection: A systematic review of ultrasound-based diagnostic performance.

BACKGROUND: Carotid artery plaques, a hallmark of atherosclerosis, are key risk indicators for ischemic stroke, a major global health burden with 101 million cases and 6.65 million deaths in 2019. Early ultrasound detection is vital but hindered by manual analysis limitations. Machine learning (ML) offers a promising solution for automated plaque detection, yet its comparative performance is underexplored. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluates ML models for carotid plaque detection using ultrasound. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, and ProQuest for stu

Applying Deep-Learning Algorithm Interpreting Kidney, Ureter, and Bladder (KUB) X-Rays to Detect Colon Cancer.

Early screening is crucial in reducing the mortality of colorectal cancer (CRC). Current screening methods, including fecal occult blood tests (FOBT) and colonoscopy, are primarily limited by low patient compliance and the invasive nature of the procedures. Several advanced imaging techniques such as computed tomography (CT) and histological imaging have been integrated with artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the detection of CRC. There are still limitations because of the challenges associated with image acquisition and the cost. Kidney, ureter, and bladder (KUB) radiograph which is inex

Diagnosis of patent foramen ovale using maximum intensity T-projection imaging.

Accurate diagnosis of patent foramen ovale (PFO) and grading of right-to-left shunt severity by the standard method of transthoracic or transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) with bubble injection is often challenging. We proposed the novel Maximum Intensity T-Projection (MIP) Imaging method as a complementary or alternative approach for simplified diagnosis and grading of PFO. MIP Imaging represents the superimposition of all frames of an echocardiographic video onto one image. Thus, all bubbles passing from right to left atrium are represented in this single image. Diagnosis and quantificati

A mathematical model to predict the evolution of retinal nerve fiber layer thinning in multiple sclerosis patients.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system (CNS). Many studies of MS patients have described axonal loss in the optic nerve of the retina, and specifically progressive thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL). We hypothesize that RNFL thinning involves the participation of 2 processes that cause CNS damage: autoimmune inflammation and axonal degeneration. To test this hypothesis, we developed a mathematical model based on ordinary differential equations to relate the evolution of RNFL thickness (measured by optical coherence tomography [OCT]) w
