Optimal outbreeding is shaped during larval life history in the splash pool copepod Tigriopus californicus.

Inbreeding and outbreeding depression are dynamic forms of selection critical to mating system evolution and the efficacy of conservation biology. Most evidence on how the relative severity and timing of these forces are shaped is confined to self-fertilization, distant outcrossing, and intermediate "optimal outcrossing" in hermaphrodites. We tested the notion that closed population demographics may reduce and delay the costs of inbreeding relative to distant outbreeding in an intertidal copepod with separate sexes and a biphasic larval/post-metamorphic life history (Tigriopus californicus). Family-level covariation between parasite resistance and mating system in a hermaphroditic freshwater snail.

Genetic compatibility, nonspecific defenses, and environmental effects determine parasite resistance. Host mating system (selfing vs. outcrossing) should be important for parasite resistance because it determines the segregation of alleles at the resistance loci and because inbreeding depression may hamper immune defenses. Individuals of a mixed mating hermaphroditic freshwater snail, Lymnaea ovata, are commonly infected by a digenetic trematode parasite, Echinoparyphium recurvatum. We examined covariation between quantitative resistance to novel parasites and mating system by exposing snail f

Linkage- and ROH-based genomic relationship matrices for IBD based management of genetic diversity.

BACKGROUND: The goal of managing genetic diversity is to maintain both the genomic uniqueness and adaptability of a population. This entails both maintaining heterozygosity and avoiding deleterious alleles from drifting to higher frequencies. Thus, genomic management strategies should not systematically change frequencies at neutral loci, as has been observed in current genomic management. We simulated 50 replicates of a population managed with optimal contribution selection (OCS), where inbreeding was controlled using different relationship matrices, where Van Raden method I (GVR), runs-of-ho

The relationship between homozygosity and the occurrence of specific diseases in Bouvier Belge des Flandres dogs in The Netherlands.

Since purebred dog populations represent closed gene pools, a relatively high level of consanguinity between individuals, and hence of inbreeding, is common. This case control study was conducted to establish the possible connection between the actual level of homozygosity due to inbreeding and specific diseases (flea allergy, osteochondrosis, laryngeal paralysis, neoplasm, autoimmune disease, hypoplastic trachea, and food allergy) occurring in the Bouvier Belge des Flandres breed. One hundred and sixty-eight animals referred to the Utrecht University Clinic formed the patient group. Each of t

Analysis of Population Structure in Hungarian Coldblood Horses Based on Pedigree Information.

The Hungarian Coldblood horse was developed in the 1920s by crossing local mares with draft horses imported from Belgium and France, and was approved as an official horse breed in 1954. The aim of the study was to analyze the quality of the pedigree, generation interval, gene origin, and inbreeding. The pedigree information was received from the Hungarian Coldblood Horse Breeding Association. The studbook data of the registered animals up to 2023 were evaluated. Two reference populations were chosen: horses having offspring in 1989 and 2023. The final database contained 21,699 horses. Pedigree

Testing the Mating System Model of Parasite Complex Life Cycle Evolution Reveals Demographically Driven Mixed Mating.

AbstractMany parasite species use multiple host species to complete development; however, empirical tests of models that seek to understand factors impacting evolutionary changes or maintenance of host number in parasite life cycles are scarce. Specifically, one model incorporating parasite mating systems that posits that multihost life cycles are an adaptation to prevent inbreeding in hermaphroditic parasites and thus preclude inbreeding depression remains untested. The model assumes that loss of a host results in parasite inbreeding and predicts that host loss can evolve only if there is no

Wolbachia promotes successful sex with siblings in the parasitoid Habrobracon hebetor.

BACKGROUND: Wolbachia are intracellular α-proteobacteria that have a wide distribution among various arthropods and nematodes. They affect the host reproduction favoring their maternal transmission, which sets up a potential conflict in inbreeding situations when the host avoids sexual reproduction preventing inbreeding depression, while Wolbachia pushes it. We used the wasp Habrobracon hebetor to test the hypothesis that Wolbachia modulates inbreeding avoidance behavior and promotes sib mating. RESULTS: Our results showed no obvious pre-copulatory inbreeding avoidance in this wasp. However,

Trends in genome-wide and region-specific genetic diversity in the Dutch-Flemish Holstein-Friesian breeding program from 1986 to 2015.

BACKGROUND: In recent decades, Holstein-Friesian (HF) selection schemes have undergone profound changes, including the introduction of optimal contribution selection (OCS; around 2000), a major shift in breeding goal composition (around 2000) and the implementation of genomic selection (GS; around 2010). These changes are expected to have influenced genetic diversity trends. Our aim was to evaluate genome-wide and region-specific diversity in HF artificial insemination (AI) bulls in the Dutch-Flemish breeding program from 1986 to 2015. METHODS: Pedigree and genotype data (~ 75.5 k) of 6280 AI

Fisher's automatic advantage of self-fertilization does not apply in cleistogamous species.

PREMISE: In hermaphroditic plants, the evolution of self-fertilization is driven by two major forces; the cost of outcrossing or Fisher's automatic advantage of selfing and inbreeding depression. Seminal theoretical works have established that an inbreeding depression threshold of 0.5 governs the evolution. Below that threshold, selfing evolves, above that, outcrossing evolves. Does this threshold apply to cleistogamous plants? METHODS: I developed a model using a Lloydian approach to analyze the evolution of cleistogamy. RESULTS: I showed that the inbreeding depression threshold does not ap

Experimental evidence for sexual selection against inbred males.

The detrimental effects of matings between relatives are well known. However, few studies determine the extent to which inbreeding depression in males is due to natural or sexual selection. Importantly, measuring fitness or key fitness components, rather than phenotypic traits allows more accurate estimation of inbreeding depression. We investigate how differences in inbreeding and juvenile diet (i.e. early stressful environment) influence a key component of male fitness, namely their reproductive success. We experimentally created inbred and outbred male mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) by m

The spectrum of frontonasal dysplasia in an inbred pedigree.

An inbred pedigree is described in which three members were affected with FND (Frontonasal Dysplasia). Two of these individuals were products of a consanguineous mating with an inbreeding coefficient of F = 0.0391. The third affected individual (propositus), was born to a marriage in which the coefficient of inbreeding was 0.0742. The mother of the propositus, whose inbreeding coefficient was 0.0625, had borderline hypertelorism and a broad nose. Several other members of the pedigree who had hypertelorism were products of consanguineous matings. The presence of consanguinity in all individuals

Comparing the hermaphroditic mating system of a parasitic flatworm between populations with an ancestral, three-host life cycle and a derived, facultative precocious life cycle.

Evolutionary changes in development and/or host number of parasite life cycles can have subsequent ecological and evolutionary consequences for parasites. One theoretical model based on the mating systems of hermaphroditic parasites assumes a life cycle with fewer hosts will result in more inbreeding, and predicts a truncated life cycle most likely evolves in the absence of inbreeding depression. Many populations of the hermaphroditic trematode Alloglossidium progeneticum maintain an ancestral obligate three-host life cycle where obligate sexual reproduction occurs among adults in catfish thir

Genomic insights and the conservation potential of captive breeding: The case of Chinese alligator.

Despite 40 years of conservation of the critically endangered Chinese alligator (Alligator sinensis), the genomic underpinnings of its status remained uncharted. Genome sequencing data of 244 individuals uncovered relatively low overall genomic diversity/heterozygosity and long runs of homozygosity, with captive populations exhibiting higher heterozygosity and smaller inbreeding coefficients compared to wild individuals. The decreased level of inbreeding in the captive population demonstrates the contribution of the large captive breeding population. The estimated recent effective population s

Massive Genetic Diversity Loss Within Asian Elephant Subspecies: New Insights for Determining Conservation Priorities.

In this study, we provide a comprehensive genomic analysis of population structure, genetic diversity, and load across the four Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) subspecies using whole-genome sequencing data of 81 wild-born individuals, with most of them currently living under human care. Our results reveal striking contrast in inbreeding: the Bornean subspecies (E.m. borneensis) exhibits the highest level of inbreeding, with ∼65% of its genome in runs of homozygosity (ROH), and the lowest genome-wide heterozygosity (∼46 heterozygous sites per 100 kb). The Sumatran subspecies (E.m. sumatranus)

Sex allocation of hermaphrodites in metapopulations with frequent population extinction and recolonization.

Competition among related males, male gametes, or pollen grains to fertilize a limited number of females, eggs, or ovules (local mate competition) is expected to favor female-biased progeny sex ratios in dioecious species. In hermaphrodites, such 'local mate competition' should similarly promote female-biased sex allocation, with reduced investment in sperm or pollen relative to eggs, ovules, or seeds. Because inbreeding, especially self-fertilization, tends to generate local mate competition, female-biased sex allocation should be associated with positive inbreeding, for example, as measured

Fitness Regulates Non-Native Species Recovery in a Simulated Trojan MYY Brook Trout Application.

Trojan Y chromosome methodologies have been developed for bio-control of non-native freshwater fish. Individuals with an altered sex chromosome genotype are introduced into the environment to mate with wild conspecific and change the population sex ratios, with the goal of eradicating local populations. This strategy preserves native stocks and can be effective when other methods are impracticable. Applications employing Trojan males with two Y chromosomes (MYY) to control non-natives have shown promise for eradication at small spatial scales when used with manual suppression. Failure to eradi

Does genetic relatedness of mates influence competitive fertilization success in guppies?

A growing number of studies highlight the nontransitive properties of ejaculates when they are in competition to fertilize a female's eggs. Increasingly, these studies suggest that postcopulatory processes act as a filter against sperm from closely related males or those with similar genotypes, limiting the deleterious effects of inbreeding on offspring fitness. We investigated the potential for such postcopulatory mechanisms of inbreeding avoidance in the guppy (Poecilia reticulata), a promiscuous livebearing fish. We used artificial insemination as a method of delivering to a female the comb

Increased genetic gains in sheep, beef and dairy breeding programs from using female reproductive technologies combined with optimal contribution selection and genomic breeding values.

BACKGROUND: Female reproductive technologies such as multiple ovulation and embryo transfer (MOET) and juvenile in vitro embryo production and embryo transfer (JIVET) can boost rates of genetic gain but they can also increase rates of inbreeding. Inbreeding can be managed using the principles of optimal contribution selection (OCS), which maximizes genetic gain while placing a penalty on the rate of inbreeding. We evaluated the potential benefits and synergies that exist between genomic selection (GS) and reproductive technologies under OCS for sheep and cattle breeding programs. METHODS: Var

Population structure of Reyna Creole cattle in Nicaragua.

Reyna Creole cattle originated from Bos taurus cattle brought to Latin America during the Spanish colonization in the fifteenth century and are the only remaining local breed in Nicaragua. However, the current genetic status of this breed is unknown. Therefore, the population structure of three recorded Reyna Creole herds in Nicaragua was studied to estimate their level of inbreeding, effective population size, and generation intervals. Data from 2,609 animals born between 1958 and 2007 were analyzed. A pedigree completeness index higher than 0.8 was required to obtain reliable estimates of th
