Brief clinical report: new, autosomal dominant form of ectodermal dysplasia.

We describe a 15-year-old boy with an ectodermal dysplasia syndrome (EDS) associated with unilateral adrenal cyst. The EDS combination of aplasia cutis verticis, hypohidrosis, nipple/breast hypoplasia, onychodysplasia, and delayed dental eruption with minor tooth anomalies has not been previously reported as an autosomal dominant trait. The association with adrenal cyst may alert other units to review their experience to determine if such combination is more than a coincidence.

Alternative rehabilitation treatment for a patient with ectodermal dysplasia.

The ectodermal dysplasia constitutes a group of hereditary disorders whose clinical manifestations can be defects in ectodermal structures. The hypohidrotic and anihidrotic are commonly types of ectodermal dysplasia. The main characteristics are dental anomalies, hypotrichosis and hypohidrosis. The oral rehabilitation of this patients is important for better social living, self esteem and oral function. This paper had as objective to relate and discuss a case of anihidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, describing the positive influence of an alternative rehabilitation treatment.

Bilateral avascular necrosis: A rare complication of Fabry disease.

Fabry disease is a rare X-linked lysosomal storage disorder caused by pathogenic variants in the GLA gene, which encodes for the α-galactosidase A enzyme responsible for degrading globotriaosylceramide. Its deficiency leads to the accumulation of GL3 in lysosomes, resulting in progressive multi-organ involvement, with predilection for the heart and kidneys. Clinical features associated with Fabry disease include acroparesthesia, angiokeratomas, hypohidrosis, corneal whorls, chronic kidney disease, cardiomyopathy, and strokes. Osteopenia and osteoporosis are less known complications, with rare

Cholinergic urticaria: pathogenesis-based categorization and its treatment options.

BACKGROUND: Cholinergic urticaria (CU) has well-described characteristic clinical presentations, yet the precise pathological mechanism remains incompletely understood. A variety of pathogeneses has been proposed, which suggests that there exists several clinical subtypes. CONCLUSIONS: In this review, we categorize CU into four subtypes: (i) CU with poral occlusion; (ii) CU with acquired generalized hypohidrosis; (iii) CU with sweat allergy; and (iv) idiopathic CU, and discuss diagnostic and treatment options.

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia with ankylosis of temporomandibular joint and cleft palate: A rare presentation.

The ectodermal dysplasias are a heterogenous group of diseases, which have one or more anomalies of the hair, teeth, nails, and sweat glands. Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is the most common type and is usually transmitted as an X-linked recessive trait. It is characterized by classical triad of hypotrichosis, anhidrosis/hypohidrosis, and hypodontia/anodontia. Here, we describe an Indian boy affected with HED and rare features including ankylosis of temporomandibular joint and cleft palate.

A novel heterozygous point mutation in the p63 gene in a patient with ectodermal dysplasia associated with B-cell leukemia.

We report a 7-year-old boy with a past medical history of B-cell leukemia with dysmorphic features, including cleft palate, hypotrichosis with trichorrhexis nodosa, hypohidrosis, oligodontia, and ridging of nails. A heterozygous germline mutation, Ala111Thr, in the p63 gene was detected in the boy and in his mother, who had no clinical expression. This case emphasizes the spectrum of different phenotypical manifestations of mutations in the p63 gene and underlines the possible role of this gene as a tumor suppressor.

Rapp-Hodgkin ectodermal dysplasia.

Rapp-Hodgkin syndrome is an uncommon, autosomal dominant condition characterized by distinctive craniofacial anomalies, cleft lip or palate, poor dentition, poor hair growth, dystrophic nails, and hypohidrosis, and hypospadias in boys. Since the original report in 1968, fewer than 20 other patients have been described. We report a new sporadic case, a 12-year-old boy who had erythrodermia and scaling skin at birth, and later developed most of the symptoms and findings previously described.

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia.

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia was first described by Thurnam in 1848. It is a rare, X-linked, recessive disorder characterized by anhidrosis or hypohidrosis, hypotrichosis, dental hypoplasia and characteristic facial features. Herein, we report a typical case of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia. A 20-year-old male presented with the above symptoms at birth. When a family history was taken, it was discovered that his uncle (mother's brother) had the same characteristic facial features and hypotrichosis.

[Ross syndrome in a 38-year-old male].

Ross syndrome is a rare partial dysautonomic syndrome defined by the classic triad of segmental anhidrosis, Adie's tonic pupil and arreflexia. In addition to a secretory and protective function, the sweating is responsible for thermoregulation, which is necessary for maintaining body homeostasis, therefore hypohidrosis may compromise the ability of the person to work or exercise in any environmental conditions. We present a case of Ross Syndrome in a 38-year-old male with heat intolerance, which interfered with his daily work practice.

[Current status and future prospect of enzyme replacement therapy for Fabry disease].

Fabry disease is characterized by deficient activity of α-galactosidase A, which results in accumulation of glycolipids, such as globotriaosylceremide, in various tissue. Clinical symptoms are varied. In childhood, pain in extremities, hypohidrosis, and angiokeratoma are main symptoms, In adulthood, renal, cardiac and cerebrovascular symptoms are occurred In past, only symptomatic treatments were available. In early 2000th, enzyme replacement therapy was developed after positive results of clinical trials. Ten years after approval, the data of long term safety and efficacy of enzyme replacemen

[Fabry disease].

Fabry disease is an uncommon, X-linked lysosomal storage disorder, caused by partial or complete deficiency of the enzyme a-galactosidase A. The defect leads to accumulation of uncleaved globotriaosylceramide on the vascular endothelium and visceral tissues, being the skin, heart, kidneys and central nervous system the most affected organs. We performed review of the literature related to the disease and emphasized that early recognition of angiokeratomas and hypohidrosis are key diagnostic signs of this serious disease. We also addressed the need of multidisciplinary assessment of these patie

Nonneoplastic disorders of the eccrine glands.

Eccrine glands are uniquely susceptible to a variety of pathologic processes. Alteration in the rate of sweat secretion manifests as hypohidrosis and hyperhidrosis. Obstruction of the eccrine duct leads to miliaria. The excretion of drugs into eccrine sweat may be a contributory factor in neutrophilic eccrine hidradenitis (NEH), syringosquamous metaplasia (SSM), coma bulla, and erythema multiforme (EM). Alterations in the electrolyte composition of eccrine sweat can be observed in several systemic diseases, most notably cystic fibrosis. This article summarizes current knowledge of eccrine glan

[A case of radiation myelopathy with characteristic findings of thermoregulatory sweat distribution and magnetic resonance images].

A 73-year-old man had undergone resection of a lung carcinoma of the right upper lobe in 1987. Post-operative irradiation (40 Gy) was given to the right hilus. In November 1988, recurrence was detected in the trachea. Laser therapy was done in December 1988. From January 9 to February 13 in 1989, irradiation (50 Gy) was given to the mediastinum. From the beginning of 1991, the patient developed muscle weakness in the right lower extremity and pain temperature sensations were impaired below the Th12 level on the left side. On October 3, 1991, he was admitted to our hospital. Neurological examin

Acquired idiopathic generalized anhidrosis: A case series of two Caucasian patients.

Acquired idiopathic generalized anhidrosis (AIGA) is a rare disorder characterized by insidious or sudden onset of the inability to sweat involving >25% of body surface area in the absence of other neurologic or sweat gland abnormalities and typically affects young, healthy, Asian men. Here, we describe two Caucasian teenagers with the diagnosis. They both had variable responses to prednisone, one in the setting of an elevated ANA, suggesting an autoimmune or inflammatory pathomechanism of the disorder. It is essential the clinician recognizes this rare entity and initiates timely intervention

Rapp-Hodgkin syndrome: observations on ten cases and characteristic hair changes (pili canaliculi).

We have reported on six personally examined patients with Rapp Hodgkin syndrome and four additional family members with documentation suggesting strongly that they also were affected with the disorder. Clinical manifestations observed in our patients include cleft lip/palate/uvula, ectodermal dysplasia, and hypospadias in males. The ectodermal dysplasia manifests through uncombable, sparse, wiry hair; alopecia in adulthood; hypodontia; hypohidrosis; and dysplastic nails. In addition, ptosis, atretric ear canals, and dysplastic eustachian orifices are suggested as other manifestations of the di
