Ankyloglossia Superior Syndrome With Complex Craniofacial Anomalies: Case Report and Literature Review.

Ankyloglossia superior syndrome is an extremely rare entity in which centrally located glossopalatine ankylosis is a principal feature. Some cases are accompanied by cleft palate, micrognathia, or tongue hypoplasia, and affected patients need careful nutritional and respiratory support. We describe a newborn girl in whom ankyloglossia superior syndrome comprised complex craniofacial malformations, including cleft palate, micrognathia, microglossia, and natal teeth as well as limb anomalies. Surgical treatment entailed release of synechiae, and glossopexy was performed successfully to prevent p

The Wiedemann-Rautenstrauch or neonatal progeroid syndrome: report of a patient with hypospadias.

The Wiedemann-Rautenstrauch or neonatal progeroid syndrome: report of a patient with hypospadias: Wiedemann-Rautenstrauch syndrome is known as a neonatal progeroid syndrome, with only few published case reports. The syndrome is characterized by progeroid appearance (triangular old-looking face with relatively large skull, prominent veins especially of the scalp, sparse scalp hair, and large anterior fontanelle), decreased subcutaneous fat (giving the clinical appearance of prominent veins and muscles), hypotrichosis, macrocephaly, and natal teeth. We report a new additional patient with a new

Pachyonychia congenita with woolly hair in a ten month old infant.

A 10-month-old female presented with severe progressive wedge-shaped thickening and discoloration of all twenty nails. Further evaluations revealed palmoplantar keratoderma along with recurrent acral blisters causing residual crusted ulcers which were present during the past six months. Other findings included scalp kinky hair and dental caries. Past medical and family history had remarkable findings such as natal teeth and similar skin lesions in her older brother since his infancy. The patients' clinical presentations and history are compatible with pachyonychia congenita presenting with con

Novel keratin 17 mutations in pachyonychia congenita type 2.

Pachyonychia congenita type 2 is an inherited ectodermal dysplasia characterized by hypertrophic nail dystrophy and multiple pilosebaceous cysts. Focal nonepidermolytic palmoplantar keratoderma, natal teeth, and pili torti may also be present. Epithelial tissues affected in pachyonychia congenita type 2 express the keratin pair K6b/K17. Here, we report three novel heterozygous mutations in the K17 gene (KRT17A) in patients presenting with pachyonychia congenita type 2. These mutations, R94-98del (deletion of the peptide sequence RLASY) and missense mutations R94P and L95Q, are all within the 1

Analysis of dental anomalies in the Siberian mole, Talpa altaica (Insectivora, Talpidae).

We re-examined tooth variation in specimens of the Siberian mole, Talpa altaica, from the collection of the Siberian Zoological Museum and discuss the mechanisms of dental evolution. The number of teeth counted in 1789 specimens ranged from 34 to 47, and supernumerary, absent, and connate teeth were observed. The most frequent tooth anomaly was an absent tooth in the premolar region (200 maxillary first premolars and 190 mandibular third premolars), which does not support Fujita and Kirino's terminal reduction hypothesis in the mandible [Fujita T, Kirino T. Natal factors affecting developmental defects of enamel in preterm infants: a prospective cohort study.

This study investigated natal factors influencing developmental defects of enamel (DDE) in premature infants using a newly refined preterm developmental defects of enamel (PDDE) index. Dental examinations were conducted on a cohort of 118 preterm infants (average age 3.5 ± 1.4 years) to record PDDE scores, while reviewing their medical records to examine natal factors. According to the logistic regression analysis, factors related to DDE prevalence were advanced maternal age, gestational age < 28 weeks, birth weight < 1000 g, 1 min APGAR score < 7, and hospitalization period > 2 months, which

Making up the numbers: The molecular control of mammalian dental formula.

Teeth develop in the mammalian embryo via a series of interactions between odontogenic epithelium and neural crest-derived ectomesenchyme of the early jaw primordia. The molecular interactions required to generate a tooth are mediated by families of signalling molecules, which often act reiteratively in both a temporal and spatial manner. Whilst considerable information is now available on how these molecules interact to produce an individual tooth, much less is known about the processes that control overall tooth number within the dentition. However, a number of mouse models are now starting

Riga-Fede disease in a child.

Riga-Fede disease (RFD) was initially described as a benign ulceration of the lingual frenum or tongue of infants, most commonly resulting from repetitive trauma by natal teeth. However, similar clinical manifestations can also be found in children with repetitive tongue-thrusting habits or certain neurological disorders. This report describes an unusual case of RFD in a 6-year-old Chinese boy. The lesion appeared as an ulcer on the anterior ventral surface of the child's tongue, and was caused by a repetitive tongue-thrusting habit. After eliminating the source of repetitive trauma and starti

Teebi hypertelorism syndrome.

Teebi (1987) described an autosomal dominant syndrome with resemblance to craniofrontonasal dysplasia. Here we present a 2 year 5 month old girl with Teebi syndrome showing a prominent forehead, hypertelorism, mild exophthalmos, downslanting palpebral fissures, a depressed nasal bridge, a broad nasal tip, a long philtrum, natal teeth, a thin upper lip, an everted lower lip, a small chin, low-set ears, preauricular fistulas, a short neck, mild pectus excavatum, an umbilical hernia, clinodactyly of the 5th fingers with mild radial deviation of the distal phalanges of the middle fingers, mild pes

Further delineation of the Beemer-Langer syndrome using concordance rates in affected sibs.

Six familial cases of the Beemer-Langer syndrome (BLS) were analyzed to further elucidate the spectrum and frequency of anomalies observed in this disorder. Preaxial polydactyly was found in 3/6 affected sibs, and, therefore, its frequency previously may have been underestimated. Some patients, described as infants affected with the Majewski syndrome (MS) or "atypical" short rib-polydactyly conditions, may indeed have BLS. A high frequency of brain defects (16/26) and cleft tongue, oral frenula, and/or natal teeth (13/29) widens the list of typical findings in this syndrome. The specific type

Soft Bite Appliance for Teething Infants.

Mother's milk is a biological secretion that provides the best nutritional source with numerous benefits to the infant, which include somatic growth, modulation of post-natal intestinal function, brain development, and immune ontogeny. As per WHO, exclusive breastfeeding is recommended for the first six months and continuation up to two years of age as both mother and the infant are mutually benefitted. Breast milk contains more nutritional, hormonal, and growth factors which are mandatory for the baby to attain the highest standards of health. Many mothers encounter bite injuries in their nip

A four generation hidrotic ectodermal dysplasia family: an allelic variant of Clouston syndrome?

A four generation Scottish family with hidrotic ectodermal dysplasia affecting predominantly teeth, skin and hair is described. Hypo- or oligodontia of the secondary dentition by late adolescence was characteristic and two individuals had multiple natal teeth. Flexural acanthosis nigricans during childhood and early adolescence is a feature in some of the women. All affected individuals produced sweat, but heat tolerance was variable. Hypoplasia of the pilosebaceous units was found on light microscopy in one subject. Scalp hair was thin and slow growing (but adult females described much improv

Treatment alternatives for sublingual traumatic ulceration (Riga-Fede disease).

The term Riga-Fede disease has been used historically to describe a traumatic ulceration that occurs on the ventral surface of the tongue in neonates and infants. It is frequently associated with natal or neonatal teeth but may also occur in older infants after the eruption of primary lower incisors. Failure to diagnose and properly treat this lesion can result in dehydration and inadequate nutrient intake for the infant. Treatment should begin conservatively and should focus on eliminating the source of trauma. A case is presented in which modification of sharp tooth surfaces by the Pediatric

Exclusion of the MSX1 homeobox gene as the gene for the Ellis van Creveld syndrome in the Amish.

Ellis van Creveld syndrome (EVC) is an autosomal recessive disorder which has previously been mapped to human chromosome 4p16.1. This disorder is characterized by disproportionate dwarfism, polydactyly, cleft palate, natal teeth, and congenital heart disease. The MSX1 homeobox gene also maps to the 4p16.1 region. Msx gene transcripts in the mouse embryo are known to be involved in pattern formation of the developing limb bud and craniofacial bones. Thus, on the basis of both map location and known gene function, MSX1 was an excellent candidate as the causative gene for EVC. Nonetheless, direct

Relationship between pre-natal factors, the perinatal environment, motor development in the first year of life and the timing of first deciduous tooth emergence.

BACKGROUND: The emergence of deciduous teeth, despite being genetically determined, shows significant correlation with the pre-natal environment, maternal factors, method of infant feeding and also family socioeconomic status. However, reported results are often contradictory and rarely concern healthy, full-term children. AIM: The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of pre-natal and maternal factors as well as the method of infant feeding on the timing of first deciduous tooth emergence in healthy, full-term infants and to examine the relationship between the psychomotor de

Prevalence of oral abnormalities in a Turkish newborn population.

OBJECTIVE: There are a few studies that describe the oral findings in newborn children in various populations but none conducted for a Turkish population. Hence, this study determined the prevalence of intraoral findings in a group of newborns and examined the correlation among these findings with the mother's systemic and gestational medical complications, cigarette consumption during pregnancy and consanguinity between the parents. METHODS: 2,021 full-term, newborn children were examined. Oral cysts, ankyloglossia, attached upper midline frenum and other medical diagnoses at birth were inve
