Technical difficulties in the construction of hard palate obturators following oncologic surgery are due to the recording limitations of the entire defect area, plus prosthesis base instability during recording of maxillomandibular relationships. This article describes a time-saving technique that ensures stable and precise recording bases. A light-polymerizing acrylic resin layer is used for making the first impression of the defect, while simultaneously obtaining an acrylic resin impression tray and base for recording maxillomandibular relationships. Adhesive paper copies are used for the ar

BACKGROUND: Sinonasal squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) are rare tumors with no etiologic link to tobacco and alcohol, as opposed to other SCCs of the head and neck (HNSCC). Little is known about the genetic changes in sinonasal SCC.
METHODS: DNA copy number changes of sinonasal SCC were analyzed by multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) and microarray comparative genomic hybridization (maCGH), and results were related to clinicopathologic features.
RESULTS: Copy number losses most frequently included genes at 9p21, 13q14, 17p13, 17q21, and 18q11. Frequent gains were observed

The effect of PD-1 blockade as a first-line therapy in nonmetastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) remains unknown. We report a case of an exceptional response to PD-1 blockade as a first-line therapy in a patient with HNSCC and lung cancer. A 59-year-old man presented with cheek swelling and chest pain. He was diagnosed with maxillary sinus carcinoma (squamous cell carcinoma) and lung cancer (non-small-cell lung cancer, not otherwise specified). The maxillary sinus carcinoma was completely resolved after 8 cycles of pembrolizumab. Immune checkpoint blockade warrants further ev

BACKGROUND: Our recent studies of microRNA (miRNA) expression signature demonstrated that microRNA-874 (miR-874) was significantly downregulated in maxillary sinus squamous cell carcinoma (MSSCC), and a putative tumour-suppressive miRNA in human cancers. Our aim of this study was to investigate the functional significance of miR-874 in cancer cells and to identify novel miR-874-mediated cancer pathways and responsible genes in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC).
METHODS: Gain-of-function studies using mature miR-874 were performed to investigate cell proliferation and cell cycle di

CONCLUSION: ERCC 1 seems to be promising as a predictive marker for response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) and early decision for surgery in advanced squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the maxillary sinus.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to find a possible relation of ERCC1 or XRCC1 expression with response to NAC and prognosis in advanced SCC of the maxillary sinus.
METHODS: From 1998 to 2006, 17 patients with advanced SCC of the maxillary sinus received NAC at the Seoul National University Hospital. The expression of ERCC1 and XRCC1 was assessed by immunohistochemistry. Complete and partial

Our aim was to evaluate the feasibility of salvage operations for patients with persistent or recurrent cancer of the maxillary sinus after superselective intra-arterial infusion of cisplatin with concurrent radiotherapy. We retrospectively analysed the records of 61 patients with cancer of the maxillary sinus who were treated in this way. Chemotherapy comprised 100-120 mg/m(2) superselective intra-arterial infusions of cisplatin given a median of 4 times weekly (range 2-5). Concurrent radiotherapy was given in a median dose of 65 Gy (range 24-70 Gy). Persistent or recurrent cancer of the maxi

Hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma (HCCC) is a rare low-grade tumor of the salivary glands made up of clear cells that form cords and nests in hyalinized stroma. To date, primary HCCCs of the paranasal sinus have not been described. This article presents 2 cases of HCCC of the maxillary sinus with unusual glandular formation and lymphoplasmacytic stroma in case 1 and a characteristic solid nest pattern and fibrocellular and hyalinized stroma in case 2. Immunohistochemical studies excluded myoepithelial origin and sinonasal renal cell-like adenocarcinomas. Negativity for p63 and p40 in case 1 rul

This clinical report describes the successful management of a patient who underwent extensive resection of a maxillary cancer, by introduction of a maxillary obturator prosthesis using zygoma implants. The patient was a 57-year-old man with cancer of the upper anterior gingiva. The maxillary bone in the affected region had been extensively excised by radical surgery. Owing to loss of teeth retaining the denture, the existing prosthesis was unstable, and the patient experienced severe speech and mastication disorders. Four zygoma implants (two on each side), and two conventional dental implants

BACKGROUND: Although hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is used to treat chronic radiation tissue injury, clinical evidence supporting its use in maxillary bone osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is lacking. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to report our results of collected patient outcomes from a single center's large experience using HBOT to treat maxillary bone ORN.
METHODS: From 1999 to 2015, 21 patients received treatment for maxillary bone ORN at our center. The medical records were retrospectively reviewed for the following variables: age, sex, comorbidities, tumor stage and site, previou

BACKGROUND: Sinonasal Undifferentiated Carcinoma (SNUC) is a rare and aggressive skull base tumor with poor survival and limited treatment options. To date, targeted sequencing studies have identified IDH2 and SMARCB1 as potential driver alterations, but the molecular alterations found in SMARCB1 wild type tumors are unknown.
METHODS: We evaluated survival outcomes in a cohort of 46 SNUC patients treated at an NCI designated cancer center and identify clinical and disease variables associated with survival on Kaplan-Meier and Cox multivariate survival analysis. We performed exome sequencing t

This case report describes the rehabilitation of a patient who had been treated with a hemimaxillectomy, reconstruction with a latissimus dorsi vascularized free flap, and radiotherapy for carcinoma of the sinus some years previously. Limited jaw opening, difficult access through the flap to the bony site, and the very small amount of bone available in which to anchor the implant inspired the development and use of a new "reverse zygomatic" implant. For this treatment, site preparation and implant insertion were accomplished using an extraoral approach. The implant was used along with two othe

To more fully characterize the clinical and pathologic spectrum of a recently described tumor entity of the sinonasal tract characterized by loss of nuclear expression of SMARCB1 (INI1), we analyzed 39 SMARCB1-deficient sinonasal carcinomas collected from multiple medical centers. The tumors affected 23 males and 16 females with an age range of 19 to 89 years (median, 52). All patients presented with locally advanced disease (T3, n=5; T4, n=27) involving the sinuses (mainly ethmoid) with variable involvement of the nasal cavity. Thirty patients received surgery and/or radiochemotherapy with cu

Chronic active Epstein-Barr virus infection (CAEBV) is characterized by chronic infectious mononucleosis-like symptoms associated with very high viral load, as assessed by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. We present an unusual case in a French woman who was followed up over 25 years with cutaneous and sinus lymphoproliferation. This white woman presented with a long history of recurrent cutaneous necrotic papules of the skin, which started during childhood and healed spontaneously with depressed scars. The lesions spread to the left maxillary sinus and were associated with hepatomegaly

Due to their low incidence and thus resulting limited diagnostic criteria as well as therapeutic options, rare diseases of the nose, the paranasal sinuses, and the anterior skull base are a significant challenge. The value as of which a disease has to be considered as rare amounts to a maximum of 5 patients per 10 000 people. Within these diseases, however, there are extreme differences. Some rare or orphan diseases like for example the inverted papilloma belong to regularly diagnosed and treated diseases of larger departments of oto-rhino-laryngology whereas other rare diseases and malformati
