Spacecraft Segment Damage Identification Method Based on Fiber Optic Strain Difference Field Reconstruction and Norm Calculation.

Real-time online identification of spacecraft segment damage is of great significance for realizing spacecraft structural health monitoring and life prediction. In this paper, a damage response characteristic field inversion algorithm based on the differential reconstruction of strain response is proposed to solve the problem of not being able to recognize the small damages of spacecraft structure directly by the strain response alone. Four crack damage location identification methods based on vector norm computation are proposed, which realize online identification and precise location of str

Ultrasensitive Monitoring of Cyanide Concentrations in Water Using a Aucore-Agshell Hybrid-Coating-Based Fiber Optical Sensor.

Cyanides, which are extremely toxic chemicals that are rapidly absorbed into the human body and interact with cytochrome oxidase, strongly inhibit cellular respiration to body death with convulsions. Cyanide ions that exist in many forms in nature such as those found in apricot kernels, cassava roots, and bamboo shoots as cyanogenic glycosides are inevitably used in various industries, including gold and silver mining as well as in dyes and plastic industries. In this study, for the sake of developing ultrahigh-sensitive sensors for cyanide monitoring in a simple manner, we chemically synthesi

Ocular axial length influence on peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness measurement with optical coherence tomography.

BACKGROUND: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) allows the measurement of the peripapillary optic nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness. The effect of ocular axial length (AL) on RNFL thickness measurement may be relevant in the interpretation of OCT results in diagnosing optic nerve diseases. PURPOSE: To assess the influence of ocular AL on RNFL thickness and on optic disc topographic parameters (optic disc area, rim area and cup volume) measured by OCT, in healthy individuals. METHODS: A sample of 109 healthy eyes classified into 3 groups according to AL (A: AL<22mm; B: AL 22-24.5mm; C: AL>24.

Blue micro-lasing from dye-doped hollow polymer optical fiber with an Ag nanoparticle-doped microring.

INTRODUCTION: Paraneoplastic neurological syndrome (PNS) was identified as a rare and unique clinical complication of primary tumors. Paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration, a subtype of PNS, involved an immune-mediated attack on cerebellar Purkinje cells, resulting in a series of cerebellar symptoms. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of an elderly female patient who presented with subacute cerebellar symptoms, positive anti-YO antibody, and elevated CA-125 levels. Further examination revealed a fallopian tube malignancy. After surgery, intravenous immunoglobulin and glucocorticoid treatmen

Development of a Customized Endoscopic Dual-Diffusing Optical Fiber Probe for Pancreatic Cancer Therapy: Toward Clinical Use.

Objective: We developed a dual-diffusing optical fiber probe (DDOFP), capable of uniformly illuminating the anatomical structure of pancreatic duct for photodynamic therapy (PDT) of pancreatic cancer in clinical settings. Background: Optical fiber presents a unique route for pancreatic PDT by enabling access to the pancreatic duct. For effective pancreatic PDT, the optical fiber should produce a uniform illumination covering of the pancreatic duct, while maintaining its transmission property under thermomechanical stresses in surgical environments. Methods: The transmission profiles of DDOFP w

Ultrasensitive evanescent wave optical fiber aptasensor for online, continuous, type-specific detection of sulfonamides in environmental water.

Sensors capable for online continuous monitoring of total sulfonamides in environmental waters are highly desired due to their adverse effects on ecosystem, unexpected concentration fluctuation, and diversity. At present, no sensor with this capability has been reported. In this study, we evaluated the cross reactivity (CR) of the previously reported sulfadimethoxine-binding aptamer using DNase I assay and found that the aptamer was type-specific to sulfonamides. We then fabricated the first type-specific sulfonamide sensor, where the aptamer was immobilized on the optical fiber of the evanesc

ZnO Nanorods Coated Single-Mode-Multimode-Single-Mode Optical Fiber Sensor for VOC Biomarker Detection.

This work demonstrated a ZnO-coated optical fiber sensor for the detection of a volatile organic compound (VOC) biomarker for diabetes for detecting isopropanol (IPA) markers. A coreless silica fiber (CSF) was connected to a single-mode fiber (SMF) at both ends to achieve a SMF-CSF-SMF structure. CSF is the sensing region where multimode interference (MMI) generates higher light interaction at the interface between the fiber and sensing medium, leading to enhanced sensitivity. Optimization of the CSF length was conducted numerically to attain the highest possible coupling efficiency at the out

Fiber-optic Bronchoscope-guided vs Mini-surgical Technique of Percutaneous Dilatational Tracheostomy in Intensive Care Units.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy (PCDT) using fiber-optic bronchoscope (FOB) is a widely practiced technique, but its availability and cost remain a concern in nations with limited resources. Mini-surgical technique of PCDT incorporating minimal blunt dissection has shown improved results even without the use of FOB. The study is primarily intended to compare these two techniques and establish a safer cost-effective alternative to FOB-guided PCDTs. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This randomized comparative study [registered (CTRI/2018/04/013191)] was conducted on 120 mechanically ven

Perspectives on Assembling Coronavirus Spikes on Fiber Optics to Reveal Broadly Recognizing Antibodies and Generate a Universal Coronavirus Detector.

In time of COVID-19 biological detection technologies are of crucial relevance. We propose here the use of state of the art optical fiber biosensors to address two aspects of the fight against SARS-CoV-2 and other pandemic human coronaviruses (HCoVs). Fiber optic biosensors functionalized with HCoV spikes could be used to discover broadly neutralizing antibodies (bnAbs) effective against known HCoVs (SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2) and likely future ones. In turn, identified bnAbs, once immobilized onto fiber optic biosensors, should be capable to detect HCoVs as diagnostic and environmenta

Sleep apnea assessment using declination duration-based global metrics from unobtrusive fiber optic sensors.

OBJECTIVE: Sufficient sleep helps to restore the immune, nervous and cardiovascular systems, but is sometimes disturbed by sleep apnea (SA). The early diagnosis of sleep apnea is beneficial for the prevention of diseases. Polysomnography (PSG) recording provides comprehensive data for such assessment, but is not suitable for use at home due to discomfort during measurement and the difficulty of identification. This study proposes an unobtrusive measurement process by placing fiber optic sensors (FOSs) in a pillow (head-neck) or a bed mattress (thoracic-dorsal). APPROACH: We test two approache

Multivariate approaches for the development of quality control in-situ fiber optics dissolution methods for fixed-dose combination tablets.

The purpose of this research was to develop a fiber optic (FO) dissolution method for quantification of multiple actives in combination pharmaceutical tablets. FO dissolution allows direct API quantification in the vessel, obviating the need for error-prone facets of traditional dissolution methods. However, FO dissolution is potentially challenged by overlapping UV spectra, matrix effects, UV-active excipients, API interactions with excipients and media, and undissolved components attenuating the UV signal. These obstacles might render FO dissolution method development more complex than LC-en
